Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5 AM. I ate toast and coffee. Pre-packed the car, so off by 5:30 AM. Man, the races area was packed by the time I got there. Had to wait in a long line to get my stuff. By the time I got to setup transition, they yelled out 10 minute until it was closed! So, I setup quickly and moved on.
Event warmup:

I did about 400 yard warm up.
Swim
  • 08m 18s
  • 528 yards
  • 01m 34s / 100 yards
Comments:

I lined up at the front of the race. I wanted to catch a good draft. Not. I knew within 200 yards this was not going to be a great day. I did not feel good but just kept plugging away. With about 100 yards to go, I got a massive drink of the lake and it stopped me dead. I just wanted to get done at that point. My HR was jacked coming out of the water over 165. 4th - 8th were all within :15, so I will call this a good swim.
What would you do differently?:

I could have tracked a little closer to the buoys. Also, I needed to RELAX. I seem to really tighten up when I have not done a OWS in awhile.
Transition 1
  • 01m 45s
Comments:

Ran hard to the bike. I put on socks, then shoes, then helmet. Seemed to go well. Ran to the mount area, did a flying mount and was ripping out of the gate. Result was on the good side of average in the age group. This was a HUGE transition area of 1000 people, so sub min. time was not happening today.
What would you do differently?:

I really need to take some time this winter to get the shoes already mounted thing down. I think I could drop lots of time by doing it.
Bike
  • 37m 11s
  • 13.2 miles
  • 21.30 mile/hr
Comments:

I was disappointed with the bike. While the average pace is my highest recorded, I wanted more. There were a few places that I slowed down and I could not get it rolling. Too many people were passing me which told me it was a faster course than I was going. HR was jacked over 160 most of the ride. I tried several times to get it down, but no go. In the last mile, Brent caught me and yelled out "keep it up Captain Crunch". I was happy that it was that late in the bike before he caught me! I got a good laugh. I tried to stay with him to the T area. I did a horrible job preparing to get off. I slowed down too much to unstrap and must have looked stupid to the crowd. It was worth it, because I did the flying dismount and ran hard to the rack. ANy time lost was made up in T2
What would you do differently?:

I have no idea. I think I need some more interval work to build power. It may be a little late in the game to build power for Tug.
Transition 2
  • 01m 13s
Comments:

This is my comedy moment of the race. I was all over the place on this one. I was sloppy on the re-rack. Stumbled and stepped into a stupid rinse bucket next to me. My sock is completely soaked and I was pissed. I completely ignored it (hoping no one saw it) and got my shoes on and started to run while putting on my hat and number belt. All that said, I was more than respectable compared to my peers.
What would you do differently?:

I needed to relax and go through the progression better. I got a little rushed which does not help sometimes.
Run
  • 25m 8s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

Ok, let me reach into my bag of run excuses on this one. Hummm, tired, no. Cramps, no. Guy pushed me off the path, I fell and it took my over 4 mins. to start running again, no. Went the wrong way on the path so my time represents 4.5 miles! I like that one but, no. All fun aside, this was my best run yet, so I will take it.

What would you do differently?:

Ride a cart to mile 3, jump off and sprint to line. Seriously, I have done zero speed work and very little LT work. I have been trying to make sure I can run a solid 10K at Tug. So, my focus has been slower runs and lower HR rates. If I was fresh and had a little bit of speed work in the legs, I could have done better. This was actually progress. If I would learn how to run, I would rocket up the standings.
Post race
Warm down:

Met up with Brent and a few other BTers (the cube, having fun tri-ing, mike_w). I did not feel like staying around for my splits, so I split. Home early which was good for the wifey.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I did not taper in any way for the race. I was on the tired side (not an excuse). I think I got a decent time. I set a goal of 1:10, but that was based on Tanner. I am not sure what I was thinking. Tanner has 2 less miles on the bike, but a little more on the swim. So, it was not a good race to base a goal on.

Overall, I am happy with my effort and motivated to keep making progress. Less than a minute between me and 11th place, so I was not that far off respectable.

Event comments:

Nice big transition area for 1000 people. Short run from water to racks. Well organized. The bike course felt very save. There were people all over the place. I liked the overall.

Nice swag bag. T-shirt and towel! I will actually use the bag for a workout bag while on the road. Oh yah, they gave out medals. Of course, that means daddy won. My girls think every time I come home with one that is means I won. LOL
