Pre-race routine:

Since this was my first triathlon, I wanted to show up early and take it all in. I ate about 400-600 calorie/high carb breakfast. I arrived before anyone else and the staff was still setting up the transition area. I set up my transition area where I thought the bike in/out area would be, but I was wrong. By the time someone told me, about 10 others had arrived. I moved it to the opposite end of the transition area and I still had a great spot next to some really helpful people. Got my chip and hung around till the pool opened.
Event warmup:

Swam about 10 laps in the pool and did my stretches for about 20 minutes. Checked my swim time and I was doing good. This is the first time in an Olympic size pool.
Swim
  • 00m 42s
  • 328 yards
  • 01m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

I dove in the pool not realizing I wasn't supposed to. Nobody said anything. They had me staged way off the time I provided them when I registered. I walked through the crowd and found my starting spot. I passed 4 and was about to get passed by 3 towards the end. A lot of bumping and grinding. A bunch of us about met head on on two occasions. I was right on the heels of the swimmer in front of me at the end. Had trouble getting out of the pool and almost slipped when an old man walked out in front of me. My breathing was definitely more labored than usual as I was breathing every stroke. But it was my fastest swim time ever!
What would you do differently?:

Practice snake swimming and exiting the pool quickly.
Transition 1
  • 02m 1s
Comments:

No major problems. The temperature had warmed up a lot so I didn't need a jacket. Running in bike shoes was a bit uncomfortable. Clipping in was a little bit of a struggle. Didn't have to avoid anyone. There was no one else around when I got in my area.
What would you do differently?:

Practice running in bike shoes and clipping in quickly.
Bike
  • 31m 21s
  • 10 miles
  • 19.14 mile/hr
Comments:

Well marked and guided course. Started out slowly and quickly got up to speed. Passed several and was passed by 4. Had to navigate through car traffic towards the end but it didn't slow me down a great deal. Legs felt great the entire route. Bike performed flawlessly. Had to avoid a major wreck in front of me coming into T2. Dismounted and entered T2 with no problems.
What would you do differently?:

Try to practice a higher cadence. Need to adjust aero-bars.
Transition 2
  • 01m 10s
Comments:

This transition was a little more difficult. I had a hard time getting my running shoes on while standing on one leg. Also had a hard time getting my number belt on. Again, no one around to avoid.
What would you do differently?:

Practice swapping out bike shoes to run shoes.
Run
  • 27m 6s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

Somewhat disappointed in myself. Running has always been my strongest event. For some reason my legs were weaker than I would like starting out. They got better but I was afraid to push myself just wanting to be sure I finished. I should have pushed myself the last mile a little harder. I was passed by 3 runners in the last mile. Plenty of cheerleaders.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more bike to run bricks!!!!!
Post race
Warm down:

None. Got caught up in finishing my first triathlon I completely forgot to stretch. I did eat some bagels and choc. milk.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not knowing what to expect being my first event. Not practicing the transitions more.

Event comments:

I'M HOOKED! Can't wait till my next triathlon. This is a great event for beginners. I wasn't very tired upon completion. Felt like I could have doubled the distances (i.e. done an Olympic level). But glad to have my first one under my belt so I can build my portfolio. Praise God for blessing me with this achievement!
