Age Group Rank = 2/25
Pre-race routine:

Stayed at the Best Western Seaside Inn in Beaufort. Got pizza the night before at upper crust (phenomenal)! Woke up at 6:25 at the hotel, had a few cups of coffee, oatmeal, and a banana. The wife ate at the continental breakfast, then left for the race at 7:20. Got dropped off at 7:45. Setup transition, got body marked, did normal prerace stuff. At 8:15 took anti-fatigue tablets, at 8:30 ate a cliff bar banana and at 9:00 bid roctane all while sipping coconut water and a rehydrate.
Event warmup:

rode 2 miles on the bike and then swam 150 meters in the pool.
Swim
  • 09m 30s
  • 500 meters
  • 01m 54s / 100 meters
Comments:

I estimated a 1:30/100m which is a bit better than I normally swim but it is really close. Last year I underestimated and I really payed for it. I passed 2 people in the first hundred and then it opened up for me, I had 25 meters to the next person ahead and 30 meters to the next person behind. I could not get breathing just right for some reason. I ended with a 1:54/100m average pace including the run to transition. After calculating all the people ahead of me I had the 75th best swim and my seed number was 79 so just about right.
What would you do differently?:

More pool time, practice pushing off lane and going under pool lines
Transition 1
  • 01m 46s
Comments:

Transition took longer than normal for me because I put on a bike jersey and arm sleeves. Normally I race in a tri suit but with the hot pool and cooler weather outside I wanted to be a little different. I really enjoyed the bike jersey which was a US Navy jersey (great pride to represent on Marine Corps base). I did the same thing last year but this year the jersey rolled on my back and it took a day and a half to get it unrolled.

Bike
  • 30m 4s
  • 10.6 miles
  • 21.15 mile/hr
Comments:

I had a really good bike. On Wednesday I got a set of bontrager wheels with zipp tires and after 1 practice ride I decided these wheels would be what I would be riding. I got destroyed by my disc wheel last year. I took a gu on mile 1 and mile 10 on the bike. Winds were much better than last year but when I hear I did a 30:04 I was mad because I knew I was going >20mph. So we GPS'ed and drove the course to confirm the error.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 2
  • 00m 50s
Comments:

Completely missed the bike rack, luckily the bike caught the edge of the bike rack and did not fall. Dropped the visor in my foot wash bath so I decided to run without it.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 20m 4s
  • 2.9 miles
  • 06m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

I pushed as hard as I could I knew that I needed a 20 minute run to get my overall time to 1:02 which was good enough to place in military division the last few years, so I went all out.
What would you do differently?:

Post race
Warm down:

Got back into the pool area and took a shower. Me and the wife walked around cheering for a bunch of friends. I have the chicken pot pie and some bannana's. Waited for the awards ceremony, I ended up 2nd in military division.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I could have shaved a few seconds in T1 but other than that I was all out for an hour.

Event comments:

Best race of my season. I love the special military division. Only wish the course was properly marked on the bike and run. For me the difference in extra bike length and shortened run length comes out dead even (+.6 mile bike and -.2 mile run). Setup events always does great. Military trophy is amazing! BRING BUG SPRAY IF YOU ARE STAYING FOR THE AWARDS CEREMONY, THE GNATS WILL EAT YOU ALIVE.
