Overall Rank = 118/270

Age Group Rank = 7/9
Pre-race routine:

Loaded up car, drove 2 hours to Canandaigua, ate muffin, apple, coffee on the drive over at about 5:15 am.
Event warmup:

Very little. Did some stretching while waiting to line up for swimming wave, then I was only in the water for about 30 seconds before we were off. Just a little swimming around to get used to the lake.
Swim
  • 19m 13s
  • 792 yards
  • 02m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

It was my first open water swim, probably not a good idea to combine that with your first triathlon. I kinda freaked out in the beginning, wasn't breathing well, had to roll over and catch my breath. After that I was okay, but for whatever reason my time was much slower than usual. In a pool I can do this distance in less than 15 min.
What would you do differently?:

Do more open water swims, not get freaked out and confused by the hectic start, use a wetsuit.
Transition 1
  • 05m 1s
Comments:

So I've just run barefoot out of the water across 100 yds of gravel, and I get to my transition spot and I realize that when I pinned my number to my shirt I put two pins through both sides, effectively pinning my shirt closed. Trying to re-pin those with my cold and clumsy fingers probably took 2-3 extra minutes. Plus tying my shoes took a long time b/c my fingers were clumsy.
What would you do differently?:

Not pin my shirt closed and maybe use that stretchy, pre-tied laces setup.
Bike
  • 52m 39s
  • 14.2 miles
  • 16.18 mile/hr
Comments:

They said 13 miles but according to Google's pedometer and other people who've raced this course it's around 14.2. I was pretty satisfied with this fairly slow time because I was using a too-small, rusty mountain bike. I could pass people on hills, but on flat parts I just couldn't get the bike to go as fast as the other people, no matter how hard I pedalled.
What would you do differently?:

Buy and use a road/tri bike.
Transition 2
  • 00m 36s
Comments:

Ran the bike in, a volunteer actually racked it for me, which was nice. Had biked in running shoes, so I just had a drink and took off.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 21m 35s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

Excellent run, I was passing people left and right. I guess it isn't surprising, I have a running background so it's by far my strongest discipline, I was just worried I would be burned out by the swim/bike, but apparently not. Managed a fast run/sprint for the last 500 feet or so. Felt like I could have even pushed the entire run harder. To be honest, all I was thinking was "3...2...1...TRIATHLETE"
What would you do differently?:

Run even harder!
Post race
Warm down:

Walking around, drank 2 bottles of water, stretched lower body.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Panicked a bit in swim, messed up pins in T1, crappy bike.

Event comments:

A bit unorganized, some confusion about swim waves and things ran a little behind. Parking was a bit far away it seems. I don't really know, it was my first one.
