Pre-race routine:

My goal for this race is to have fun! I’d like to see my swim improve from 2010 but with the tides, etc. that may be difficult to measure. I’d be delighted with a sub 30 minute swim (assuming no wetsuit). It was not wetsuit legal in 2010 when I did this race but it was in 2009 and 2011.

We drove to Wilmington on Friday and did packet pickup. Had a pre-race meal at Mellow Mushroom.

On Saturday, I got up at 4:$5 am. I had a bagel with peanut butter on it and a banana. I also had a water bottle of Camelbak Elixir and half a cup of barely drinkable hotel coffee. I got dressed and walked Zoe before eating. Then Kevin dropped me off near the transition area and went back to the hotel to have his breakfast, etc. Transition was opened from 5:00-6:45

Event warmup:

I set up my transition area at the Wrighsville Beach town hall and walked the half mile to the swim start in front of Blockade Runner. It was about 70 degrees out when the first swimmer hit the water (water temperature officially 83 degrees).

Note: The event provides buses from transition to swim start, I just chose to walk. They also provide gear transportation from swim start back to transition. I used this to send my shoes and t-shirt back.

I was in wave 6 (of 8) and started at 7:15
Swim
  • 25m 4s
  • 1500 yards
  • 01m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

High tide is at 10:52 AM on Saturday (low tide is at 4:43 AM). The push was pretty good which meant that there was a strong cross current for the first 200-300 yards before the tide got behind us.

The tide gave a nice push once getting across the cross current.
Transition 1
  • 04m 49s
Comments:

The swim is from Blockade Runner to Seapath. The timing mats are right at Seapath but transition is across the street so there is a long run from the swim exit to transition.
Bike
  • 36m 19s
  • 11.5 miles
  • 19.00 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike went well, especially once I got off Airlie which is pretty but extremely bumpy!
Transition 2
  • 01m 33s
Run
  • 26m 13s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

I feel good about my run in this event, especially given that this event took place at the tail end of peak training for IM Louisville.
