Pre-race routine:

Got up around 4:45. Ate part of a Clif Bar and drank a bottle of gatorade. Took care of business. Tasted some of little Buzz's orange juice that we bought from the hotel shop. She was refusing to drink it and I don't blame her. It was nasty. This almost came back to haunt me later. Loaded up the bike and was on the way to the race by 5:45. Got to race site and set up my transition area first. Check and double checked, everything looked goo. Picked up chip, got body marked, kissed the wife and little girl, and headed to the beach.
Event warmup:

Only had time for a short 5 minute warmup. Swam out to first buoy and back.
Swim

  • 400 meters
  • 01m 57s / 100 meters
Comments:

I didn't run in very hard. Just kinda held back for a second to let everyone get out of the way. Didn't work so great. I ended up having to swim through/over a lot of people getting to and around the first buoy. I tried drafting off of a few feet, but couldn't really find anyone going my pace and direction at the same time. I sighted pretty well. Ended up breathing every other stroke (left side) most of the way. Felt really good and comfortable. Best of all, no backstroke or breastroke was needed to catch my breath. I swam hard and smooth the whole way. Felt great.
What would you do differently?:

I'd probably line up closer to the front and inside next time to try to get out ahead of the masses and maybe catch some faster feet.
Transition 1
  • 02m 56s
Comments:

It was a rather long run from the beach into transition through deep loose sand. Poured a cup of water over my head and splashed another one around in my mouth to try to wash away the ocean taste and feel. Got to the bike, washed feet with water bottle, put on shoes, helmet, glasses, clipped watch onto bike and go. I ran faster than I thought I could in bike shoes out of transition.
What would you do differently?:

Clip watch onto bike first. I had to lay it on my towel while doing everything else.

Comments:

I was very pleased with my bike performance. I rode hard but comfortable the whole way. There seemed to be a lot of people on the course who didn't understand that this was a NO DRAFTING race, but they mostly appeared to just be newbies. I was passed by several TT bikes with discs and such. But I re-passed at least 2 or 3 of them who got flats. Weird, but fun. A1A was open to traffic, but it was very light and well managed. No traffic to speak of once you turn onto Solana. About a mile from the end, I eased up a bit on the effort to try to spin out my legs and ready them for the run. Did a decent job of unstrapping my shoes and riding on top of them to the dismount line.
What would you do differently?:

Uh, push just a little harder at the end.
Transition 2
  • 01m 10s
Comments:

Had a pretty quick T2. Had to take time to put on socks. My shoes just don't work without them. Dmoore started in the wave behind me but caught up to me in T2. We ran out together, but he left me behind pretty quickly after that.
What would you do differently?:

Get some shoes I can wear without socks.
Run

Comments:

Well, my calves tried to cramp again coming out of T2. Not near as bad as last year though. I just kept running as fast as I could bear until they loosened up around a 1/4 mile into it (they hurt quite a bit the next 2 days). Considering how I've let my run training drag a little I'm really can't complain about my run performance. I did loose 9 positions on the run but I didn't walk (except for maybe 15 secs at the turn around) and I finished strong. I think I finally ran a negative split race. After the turn around I was able to pick up the pace a little bit. I picked out this one guy in my age group who had passed me on the way out (wearing a funning little cycling hat) and decided he was not gonna beat me. I kicked it hard at the end and blew past him and a couple of others. Felt great! Well, almost. I kept it right on the edge of throwing up on the way back.
What would you do differently?:

Pushed a little harder. Run more in training. Not drink old orange juice before the race. Tastes much worse the second go round.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around the paking lot for a few minutes to catch my breath, then found the family and got some sports drink, a bagel and some water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Slower swimmers.
Lack of run training.
Legs cramping (lack of sodium? lack of bricks?)

Event comments:

I really enjoyed this race. It's a great course with no hills and mostly straight riding and running. The organization was great. Only snaffu was that after the race one of the volunteers was letting us go into transition to get our gear together before the last (really slow) bike was in. An official finally got rather loud with a few folks and ran us all out of transition. I think the last rider must have been peddling a tricycle or something. Seemed like it took forever. Anyway, that really wasn't a big deal. Race was well done. Results were up on the website by the time we got back to the hotel. Great race. Can't wait to do it again next year!!
