Pre-race routine:

Woke up, had breakfast (cereal and fruit), loaded up my bike and hit the road. I thought I was going to be late but it worked out perfectly. Registered on time, hit the port-o-potty, walked around for a few minutes and went to the swim start. I had my bike water bottles in the freezer and forgot them! Man I wish these events would carry pre-race water.
Event warmup:

Just walking. I should have went for a warm-up run or ride, and got in the water for a few minutes before the race start. I never know when they're "closing down" the transition area. I wouldn't want them to close down with my sneakers on me. Anyway, I'll have to be more aware of that and warm up better next time.
Swim
  • 10m 9s
  • 547 yards
  • 01m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

I think I was a little disoriented at first, and that made me nervous. It was my first open water swim on the season. There wasn't much room to get in the water and spread out at the start so it was sort of a mess starting out. Once things spread out a bit it got much better. I got a little off course on the last leg, but not too bad. I was hoping for a little quicker but I think I swam well; the difference between my goal and my actual time might be able to be blamed on open water + the run to T1. Though my time was a few seconds longer than last year, I placed 19 spots higher.
What would you do differently?:

Warm up 100M or so.
Transition 1
  • 01m 15s
Comments:

I was all the way in the back so it was a long run to the exit.
What would you do differently?:

Not take a sip of water during transition! But given that I had no bike bottles (only my fat nalgene), I felt like I had to. Learn how to mount with shoes on the pedals. Just be quicker in general.
Bike
  • 43m 53s
  • 14 miles
  • 19.14 mile/hr
Comments:

Once I got out of T1 (and thought I gave myself enough room) I started to clip in and was informed that I can't until I crossed the hardly visible gray duct tape on the gray ground. I should have been looking out for it but damn...luckily I didn't get a penalty! The first bit I was trying to settle my breath and pick up to speed. After the first few miles I felt pretty good. The middle of the course was awesome: rolling but with some nice downhills. I remember a hill toward the end that zapped me a little. But overall, I think I gave it a good effort.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe I could have went a bit harder at some points. I really didn't want to bust on the run though. Also, I think I could be more confident passing people.
Transition 2
  • 01m 27s
Comments:

Alright.
What would you do differently?:

Do a test run without socks and so I wont have to put them on. My NB's gave me irritation, but these Brooks seem like they might work. That would save me a good 10-15 seconds! Again, I would not drink water but...
Run
  • 27m 5s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

Hills in all the wrong places (like a tenth of a mile out of T2; the one right before the turn-around is a bitch too). I was really happy that the clouds kept the sun away. Really awesome.
What would you do differently?:

Probably push it a bit harder (it's easy to say that now, sitting at home). I know I can. I think next time I'm going to bring my watch; that way I can keep an eye on my pace and push myself a bit harder.
Post race
Warm down:

Just walking.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just my own abilities--S.B.R. abilities and my ability to pace properly. I'm sure I'll get better at it the more races I do.

Event comments:

I'm really happy with the outcome. Last year I did it in 1:29:23; assuming the competition was roughly the same as last year, by cutting off five and a half minutes, I moved up significantly in all areas (I went from placing 156 to 81 overall mens). I went from the tail end of the meaty part of the curve to the front end of it. I'll take it, and hopefully run with it!

I enjoyed this distance and I'd like to get a lot better at it.
