Pre-race routine:

I stayed up too late last night. Oh well. Up at 5:30, toast with PB&J, coffee, and water. Drove to the race.
Event warmup:

Bike about 15 minutes, run about a mile, swim about 200m, in that order.
Swim
  • 10m 7s
  • 547 yards
  • 01m 51s / 100 yards
Comments:

Time out of the water was 9:30. Guys who hold 1:15/100m in the pool were going around 8:00, so I think that this swim does pretty much represent my current ability. No shame in this one. Sighting, etc., went well. I even caught a draft for the first 150m, but then lost it. And I was NOT the last open athlete out of the water. Close, but not last.

On the other hand, the guy who beat me for first in masters open swam 7:48 (3rd best in the race). He beat me overall by 1:00. Hmmm.
What would you do differently?:

Just keep training.
Transition 1
  • 00m 40s
Comments:

A bit too much fumbling but still 5th best T1.
Bike
  • 36m 23s
  • 14 miles
  • 23.09 mile/hr
Comments:

Not bad. I even passed a few open guys. I lost concentration a few times, but maybe those were needed breaks?
Transition 2
  • 00m 33s
Comments:

Better. 3rd fastest in the race.
Run
  • 20m 47s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt bad right away. I knew I would and was expecting it, so no biggie. After the turnaround I could see that nobody was close behind, and I wasn't catching the guy in front of me, so cruised it home. I ran the first part hard b/c I thought Mike Frassica was inches behind me, but that turned out not to be the case.

I probably should start paying more attention to the fact that a few AG athletes (i.e., later waves) in these races beat me each time, though I don't actually know about it until the results are posted -- might provide some motivation to go harder in the run even when I'm by myself.
What would you do differently?:

Run more. I think (knock on wood) I'm healthy enough to start doing exactly that.
Post race
Warm down:

Short ride.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training.

Event comments:

I really like this race. I was overall faster than last year (slower on the run, again, no surprise).
