Pre-race routine:

I woke up at 5:00, had some water a banana and part of a bagel. I was at the race site at around 5:40 and it was already pretty crowded but I was able to get a pretty good rack space (which was subsequently moved and bothered multiple times). All there was left to do was wait for the start.
Event warmup:

A wee bit of swimming in the back bay, which obviously didn't help.

This was a tough swim for me. I rented a Zoot Suit Synergy the day before which is a great suit -- I might get one if possible. Anyways, this was my first triathlon and my first open water swim, so I knew it was going to be rough, but not this rough. The course itself was nice, but in the first 50 meters I had trouble breathing and things started getting really hairy. I ended up doing the backstroke for most of the swim. Needless to say my sighting was horrible.
What would you do differently?:

Lets see.. Much more open water swimming. A lot of it.

Considering how the swim went, the transition seemed to go pretty smoothly. I had practiced a basic transition a couple days before, so, this being a first, felt pretty solid.
What would you do differently?:

More practice, always more practice. Especially getting out of a wetsuit.

After the swim, the bike was great. I got a pretty good start and keep a good and quick cadence for the first lap. The steep hill wasn't bad the first time around but I finally nailed it the second time. I just set myself in the small ring and powered it up as long as I could without standing and then dug into the rest. The last mile I eased up the gear to spin and relax my legs
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really, it was good and I didn't kill myself for the run. Buy aerobars..

It was good. After the bike my legs felt pretty good and I just let it rip. I handled the hill well and then it was smooth sailing from there

Train more to run faster

Warm down:

Not much of a cool down-- just walked around and took a shower when I got back to the hotel. Had water and a banana and then some more breakfast at the hotel

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not being able to swim in open water

Event comments:

This was probably the best race I could have done for my first triathlon. It was well organized and not too crowded. The course was scenic and I'm sure if I could have done more ows, the swim would have been pretty easy. Overall it was fun.
