Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 3:15am Ate my bagel with honey and drank 1 bottle of water. Left the house at 4am and drove 120 miles to the race.
Event warmup:

Rode the bike 1/2 mile, jogged a little down to the lake and was the last person to swim a warm up.
Swim
  • 08m 19s
  • 400 yards
  • 02m 05s / 100 yards
Comments:

I put down a very high swim estimate hoping to start last. I started 227 so I was in the 9 min crowd. I swam a little different this year. At the start I ran down the ramp, around the dock and swam a little farther to the right and made an angle to the turn buoy. This allowed me to pass a lot of people and not get caught up in them. It worked great. After the second buoy I had trouble navigating and went really far to the right. I lost a lttle time but no one was in my way. After I got to the last turn buoy, the water was bubbling from the crowd. I had a guy on my left keep shoving me and I just kept swimming. Finally out of the water and up the ramp to my shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Navigate better. I wasn't looking up much because I usually veer a little left swimming but this time I went right.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

No time for the first transition. The time was included in the first run.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 38m 50s
  • 12.5 miles
  • 19.31 mile/hr
Comments:

I had a really good bike ride...passed a lot of faster swimmers. I only had one problem, the course was open to traffic and the cars would get bunched up behind slower bikers making it hard to pass them. I went back and forth with another biker for about 6 miles. We kept pushing each other but avoided the drafting rule as best possible.
What would you do differently?:

Almost forgot to put my helmet on. Took 2 steps and realized it wasn't on. It cost me 5 seconds.
Transition 2
  • 00m 51s
Comments:

Shoes and helmet off...running shoes on.
What would you do differently?:

went smooth
Run
  • 22m 37s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

I wanted to run the two 1.5 mile runs in 10 min each. The 1st run included the swim to run transition and was a 12:04. The 2nd run was a true timed 10:33. I passed a lot of people on both runs. I kept wanting to rest on both runs and had to keep telling myself they're just a 1.5 mile and I could rest later.
What would you do differently?:

nothing...I was over 1 min faster than last year.
Post race
Warm down:

lots of water

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Last race of the year. I had run 4 races in 4 weeks. 3 sprints and an Oly. I was worn out.

Event comments:

Team Magic does a great job. I got to meet up with some friends. I was 2 mins from 3rd in age group and 4 min ahead of the next person in AG. I have some things to work on in the off season. All in all I was 2 min faster than last year and 25 places farther up so it was a good race.
