Hello, I am the Operations Director for Richmond Multisports, the production company for Chasing Chicken.

Given the new reverse format this year, I wanted to put this out there for discussion and Q&A.

To start, there will be wave starts for the 5K run. The run course will be the same as previous years, and you will proceed into the west end of the transition area to pick up your bike. The bike course will be the same as previous years, going out River and back on Patterson. You'll return in the same place, and instead of putting on your running shoes (strange, I know!) you'll strip down and run to the pool. The Tuckahoe Y has two indoor heated pools, so women on the left, men on the right. The snake swim will finish as you pop out of the pool and cross the mat to read your time.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Hey! I signed up a week ago and this will be my first race. I'm pretty excited. I have a general question about the pool swim, which may seem silly.

What's the rule on flip turns? Are they OK throughout, or only at the half-lap point but not when switching lanes, or not at all?

Just want to know, so I can practice. Thanks!

If you can do them, go for it! I never learned how. I missed an age group 1st last year by 13 seconds, because my lane changes stunk.

If you are lucky enough to have two lanes at your pool, practice doing them under the lane lines.

We're glad that you've chosen us for your first race! I look forward to seeing you.

Thanks for the response!

I'm sure that I'll get a chance to snag two lanes at my local Y. I'll try and practice the lane change + flip turn combo and see how it goes. Worst case scenario, I can do them at the half-lap point and then just duck under. I'm wondering if flip turns the whole way might cause issues with lane sharing.

Side note: Flip turns are not too bad to learn. I'm sure some swimmer somewhere would be happy to show you. They don't take too long to get good at, and the additional power you get from the wall push-off and the quicker turnaround just might be worth it! :-)

As this particular race will split women into one pool and men into the other, the flip turns under the lane lines will be in opposite directions depending on your gender. Men will move from the right side of the pool to left, so the flips under the lines will be when making a right turn. Make sense?

Yep! Hasn't even thought about switching lanes on the left vs the right, but it probably makes a difference. Thanks!!!

I've tried to do flip turns in a few of the RMS pool races.  It's pretty tough.  A lot of the passing happens at the ends of the lanes, so it can get pretty crowded there.  I didn't usually have enough wall space.

It was a pleasure seeing so many runners and athletes-to-be this past weekend at the Monument 10K. The weather was not ideal (cool, light drizzle, very humid), but I was able to crush my PR by 2:20. I am still paying for it today.

I hope several of you got to use the discount code we gave out at the expo and told you expired Sunday at midnight.... but between you, me, and the lamppost... it's still active. Use code 10K10 through the end of the week for 10% off our whole calendar.

Registration for the Chasing Chicken Reverse Triathlon CLOSES at 8PM on Wednesday, April 2. Sign up now to race head-to-head against several local pros AND a guy in a chicken suit!

5K RUN > 13 MILE BIKE > 300m SWIM.
