Subject: When Did You Become a Triathlete?
Question............ When did you become comfortable referring to yourself as a triathlete? I am starting my third season and have completed a hand full of sprints and a couple of Olys. First season I was in the bottom 25% of my age group. Last year improved to near middle of the pack (not quite there, I hope get over the hump this year). I am still not comfortable refering to myself as a triathlete. I just have this feeling that I haven't earned the title yet.

The second after I crossed my first triathlon finish line I became one.  I knew it already but everyone that thought I couldn't do it believed then.

I haven't even done a triathlon yet, but consider myself a triathlete because, well, I am currently training for 3 sports. The race is just what pulls them all together, the training process is what makes people athletes.

As soon as I crossed the line in my first Triathlon (Sprint). Mind you, I ensure when I tell someone that I am a Triahlete I let them know I haven't done an Ironman as eveyone seems to associate the two.

after my 2nd Sprint.
The 1st time I was just a guy testing my athletic abilities for fun.. although others said I was, I didn't "feel" like a triathlete.
The 2nd one I had more than 2 weeks to train for it and a nagging desire to plan ahead for more

Does it really matter????
Anybody can finish a triathlon race and can call themselves a triathlete.
There are races out there with 200 meter pool swim and a very short bike and run.
It is not a big deal.

I'm started to feel comfortable referring to myself as a Triathlete. Finishing a triathlon doesn't make someone a Triathlete imo. Train everyday, embracing the people of the sport both professionals AND amatures, suporting companies in the sport, having the sport become your lifestyle...that is what makes someone a triathlete. All my opinion....

Disclaimer: I think I've done about 10 sprints/olympics, 2 1/2 IM, and 1 IM.

I became a triathlete the moment I made the decision to train for one.  I was comfortable in calling my self a triathlete after finishing my first race.

a Triathlete is some one who takes the sport as a way of life. a baseball player is not a baseball player if he goes to a field and thows and takes batting pratice... you have to compete in the sport to be considered a baseball player. just the same as competing in a triathlon. True Triathletes are not going to do a pool swim and stationary bike and treadmill run and consider tehm selves a triathlete? you have to be able to train every day as well as compete to the higest level you are able.

Not that the label really means tons, but maybe when I started getting comfortable wearing a speedo to the pool (they are modest ones though).

No, it really doesn't matter at all ........

When someone asks you, "What are you doing this weekend?"

And you answer, "I'm running Saturday morning and going for a bike ride on Sunday."

They're like, "Why?"

And you answer, "I'm training for a [insert distance] triathlon."

They go, "Oh, that's cool, I've watched one of those on TV!"

And you're like, "Yeah, that's an Ironman, I'm not doing one of those yet [unless you are]."

That person is going to call you a triathlete from then on more than likely ........

If you do not need to hold a professional license for something then you can legally call yourself anything you want.  I hold a professional license and can call myself an architect - those who don't "can't" because there are life safety and legal implications to it.

Calling yourself a triathlete doesn't have any implications at all unless you are on a training run/ride/swim with other athletes who then try to kick your azz in a testosterone laden one-up-fest .........

I feel the same way. Because I'm not an amazing athlete, I feel weird calling myself a triathlete.

Technically I am... because swim/bike/run all together in a race... but I always have this mental image of what a triathlete is. A lean, muscular person whose body screams... athlete! That just isn't me.

As I have moved up in distance, I feel a bit more comfortable with calling myself one... but I will always feel like I'm missing the mark.

Depends on who's asking, I guess! At work, I'm a triathlete - and people think I'm nuts. To my friends, including my triathlete friends who are way better than I am, I'm a triathlete. To random people I meet, most likely I'm a triathlete. Unless they themselves are triathletes and are super-hard-core and look like they could kick my a$$; then perhaps, I wouldn't call myself a 'triathlete' per se. I might say that I "do" them and train for them.

Yeah, you’re right, not a big deal.  You know, except to those people who had a sedentary life, were never the athletic type, didn’t have to confidence to think they could AND changed all that thinking, entered a race, trained for it, and experienced the JOY of finishing and now KNOW they can and keep at it.  MIGHT be a HUGE deal for those people.

Nah, as I understand it, this site is pretty much created with the premise that anyone can finish a triathlon.  I agree, pretty much anyone CAN finish a tri.  Do they?  No.   Almost anyone could get a doctorate if they put in the long hours, but most don't.  That the difference.

I will agree that the label is pretty much irrelevant.  There will always be someone faster or more "hardcore" than you.  If there isn't, then wait a few weeks.   Just do your thing and stop worrying about what people call you and what to call yourself.   Don't worry if you "qualify" to be called a triathlete.
