Over january and pretty much most of December, I have been doing all my bike training inside on my trainer. Basically because I am a wimp; I don't like the cold, or cycling in the dark, hate the high winds and I scared of slipping on wet leaves /road/ice.

So now the turbo is becoming like a security blanket for me, I'm getting in plenty of time on the trainer but I know I ought to get my butt outside. Especially as the weather is improving albeit slightly, but to be honest I'm not actually looking forward to it - although I'll probably feel great once I get into the open air again. Do you think this will damage my training overall?

Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions for cutting the ties?

thanks guys

If you have a good trainer, and you use it regularly, you should be in very good shape when you hit the road. I typically improve some over the winter just using my trainer. It doesnt help with handling skills at all, but for bike level of fitness.... trainers are great.

I haven't ridden outside since sometime in November I think (maybe October).  Looking at my schedule, it appears unlikely I'll get outside until March right now.  I am wholly unconcerned about my bike training.

But I can't wait to get outside again.

I haven't even ridden since December ... trainer or outside.  I'm just looking forward to being able to get on my bike at all!

as long as you are riding and getting solid trainig sessions I wouldn't sweat it. Just make sure you are doing some quality sessions (avoid spinning around only Z1-Z2) and when the weather allows you then head out the door!

PS. I won't ride outside probably until March...

Well, I feel bad for most of you.  I live in Vegas so I can ride outside anytime I want....  But I will be suffering when it's 110 in the shade this summer.

However, I still do lots of my training during the week on the trainer because I never really liked to ride in the dark.  Also, my wife's friend was killed about a month ago when riding at night and a semi truck didn't see him and ran him over on the shoulder. - now she gets a little uptight if I suggest going out at night.

For about 8 weeks, I was only inside.  I jumped on my bike for the first time this last weekend for a long ride, and felt GREAT.  Stronger and faster than all of last year.  Just work on your base on the trainer and it will pay off huge when you finallly get outside.  Shouldn't hurt you at all.

I've just purchased my bike as the snow hit us so I am spending a lot of time on the trainer.  I'm finding it takes discipline to do longer rides as it's too easy to hop off knowing that I'm not 10 miles from home.

Take your bike for a short pleasure ride just to get out there and build your confidence.  Tell yourself you'll just pedal around the block or something.

Does everyone use a "trainer tire" and switch back and forth to ride outside?

Even during the summer our family schedule only permits me maybe a dozen road rides so I rely on the bike trainer.  Have only done a few sprint races, one Half IM, and this year will be more sprints/Olympics.

A good foundation of work on the trainer should provide a big benefit once rubber meets the road.

I've been on the trainer since September. I had an outdoor ride in mid-October and was faster at the same HR, so I think you'll be fine. You can't coast on a trainer, and there aren't any downhills to rest on. It's also easier to stick to a routine schedule, since you don't have to worry about weather. I'm wimpy about cold on the bike. It would probably be okay if I bought good gear as with running, but I'm saving for a tri-bike instead.
