Subject: Moving to Fort Lauderdale area
Hi, I'm a native Floridian moving back down after two years in South Carolina. I'm from the Tampa area and never really went farther south to often. We're moving to Fort Lauderdale in the next few months and we began the process last weekend of finding an area to live. We drove around almost all of Broward county and some of West Palm (or whatever the county is above Broward) My husband will be working in Pompano Beach so we want to stay within 30 minutes or so of that area. We liked Parkland and the Coral Springs area as well as Deerfield and downtown Fort Lauderdale. Any advice about any of these areas? Places to avoid? Good schools? (I am an elementary school teacher.) Thanks in advance!

I live in Deerfield and work in Pompano. Schools are good in Coral Springs and Parkland, as well as Boca Raton. Pompano and Deerfield, schools are yuck. Lots of Private schools to work at too. Good Luck and keep in touch.

Unless you are a fan of traffic, I would stay north of Downtown Ft. Lauderdale. The East/West traffic can be just as bad if you live out in Parkland or Coral Springs though. Boca is a great community with good schools as well as Delray Beach. The commute from Delray to Pompano is about 30 minutes. Depending if you have kids or not, Downtown Delray is a great place to live. Good news is that it is a great Market to rent or buy right now. I may be biased, but if you are from Tampa and lived in South Carolina, Palm Beach County may have more similarities than Broward. My 2 cents anyway.

Also plenty of races in the upcoming months to be ready for and never have to travel too far! Good luck with the move and welcome back to Florida!

I grew up in Coral Springs! I watched Sample road grow from a two lane country road to the monstrosity it is now. We used to camp where the Saw Grass Expressway is now! Schools in that area have always been pretty good, for public schools. School over crowding has always been a problem for over 25 years! Of course the cost of housing $$$ and taxes go with the better schools! Quite a few people are migrating North to Palm Beach and heading to the western portions of that area. At this point in the economy you might get a good deal on a foreclosure? Traffic, argh!!!! Car insurance, Arghh!!!! Places too avoid..., unless you can afford the exclusive secure area's of Ft. Lauderdale and Deerfield Beach and send your kids to private schools I would keep on digging in the other area's.

I live in Coral Springs.  When we moved here, we chose this area for the schools.  It's a fine community - I have met lots of nice people from here, Parkland and surrounding areas.  I am homeschooling my kids now, so I would love to move east closer to the beach (especially Deerfield - like that area).  Not sure that would fly with the kiddos tho- they have lots of friends in the hood.  CS and Parkland have lots and lots of stuff for kids to do, if you have or are planning on having kids.

Each area has it's own feel.  It's pretty suburban out here, along with plenty of the desperate housewives    Some areas are more "plastic" than others.  We came from a town of 4000 in Ohio and have adapted fine.  Grow where you are planted, right?  Also lived in Charleston, SC for a while - it's nowhere near the same down here.  Doesn't mean that's good or bad.

And, there is a very active tri community in palm beach, broward, and miami-dade...plus as you know, year round training!!  Keep us posted on where you land!!!!  Good luck.

I would say that it depends on your personality and how much you mind the commute. If you like to hang out and party a bit (or at least like to be a bit closer to the scene), then def. stay east, even if it's a bit away from downtown FTL. Deerfield and Pompano can be nice, you just have to find the right place. I live and work in Pompano and love it. Plus, Pompano Athletic center is great and not over-crowded - the pool is $1 for lap swim. On the other hand, if you are more of homebodies or you have kids and want nicer schools, etc AND you don't mind commuting traffic (avg of abt an hour), then move to Coral Springs / Parkland. The Coral Springs Sports complex is great and the community is great for kids. Coral Springs is a wonderful community and the Police are always out in full force (a good thing IMHO). I have lived in Coral Springs and Pompano and would def choose Pompano for where I am in life right now.

I don't know if it's actually called that, but it's between Atlantic and Copans, just off US1, near the airport and that huge golf course. You can get to it off of US1, but I always turn onto 6th and go behind the ampitheater. You could prob get a better look if you google mapped it.

Thanks for the offer. I'm in entry level riding on a fitness bike, though, so I'm a little daunted to do a "serious" ride. BTW, how's the ride? It's so frustrating riding on the local streets and stopping at all the lights.

We'll be there.  This will be my early season barometer to remind me of how much I have NOT been training.

I live in Boca right now. The good part is that the schools are excellent.  They're always looking for teachers around here - I'd start looking now because I think they usually hire in the spring. If you want to work at a private school St. Andrews is the top one here and they are looking for a bunch of teachers for next year. They're adding a new class from pre-K 4 through 3rd or 4th grade. Each class needs two teachers so they need a lot of new people! I am planning on trying to teach there in 2009 when my son will be in school.

Other good things include beautiful beaches, great parks, lots of shopping/restaurants right in town and that sort of stuff.

The only complain I have abouot Boca (besides the heat which you won't mind if you're from FL!) is that it seems the majority of people down here are super materialistic. I have met a handful of normal people, but they are harder to meet that the plastic ones that seem to be the norm down here.

Good luck!!

Momx3 thanks so much for the information about the schools. I will definitely look into St Andrews. I teach at a Catholic school now in third grade and I love it. I was thinking about Boca as well, but didn't want to live around a bunch of people who are materialistic. Any areas close to that area? Delray is close to Boca right?

Thanks to everyone else to! I can't wait to get down to Fl. There seems to be a lot more triathletes down there compared to where I am. Hopefully I'll find a group to train with, makes it a lot more enjoyable.

So I looked up st andrews and it's an episcopal school. Just assumed it was catholic. Doesn't really matter either way to me though, it's all christian which is the important thing.

It;s actually not all Christian anymore. It started out like that and is still based with the Episcopal church, but the student body is very diverse. In fact, a few years ago some of the Jewish families tried to get them to change the crest and take the cross out but the school said no. They do have chapel every week, but it is less religious than it used to be. My husband went there years ago and we have lots of friends who send their kids there now. I like it - I just can't afford the $15,000 price tag for kindergarten!

Oh - but there are lots of Catholic schools around if you want to look there - I know of St. Joan's and St. Jude's in Boca.  There's also Boca Christian, Spanish River Chrisian (presbyterian) , St. Paul's (lutheran I think?) and Advent Lutheran.

Thanks.

Oh, and if I had my choice I think I'd live in Delray, although that is getting more like Boca every day.
