Subject: where to OWS near San Jose?

The only lake/reservoir I see that allows swimming is Lake Almaden - which is famous for its duck/goose poop bacteria problems.  Do I need to trek to Fremont for Lake Elizabeth or Livermore for DelValle and Shadow Cliffs?  Anyone know of San Jose area OWS opportunities?

thanks!

i am not familar with the south bay i just go off the inlaws dock on bethel island in the delta.

if you wanted to swim in the bay you could go to the beach in alameda.

I am doing the Catfish Open in June at the Stevens Creek Res, I would Imagine it is a good place for OWS.

I have been looking for years...I too would love to find someplace to open water swim in the area...Lake almaden isn't too bad if the water level is up...but it usually doesn't open for swimming until the end of may...I havn't checked it for this year.

not sure of south bay...but there is always bay swimming...in redwood shores they swim near the hotel sofitel. I have also heard that up in the San Francisco there are all kinds of tri teams who swim out in the bay. I too will be watching this thread...as I need to get some OWS training in. GOOD LUCK!

I just searched for the Redwood Shores info.  and got this site....may be of some help...and good info...not sure how up to date this is.

http://home.pacbell.net/leewaysf/theswim.html

Also found this info on Lake Almaden:

Water Activities

Almaden Lake Park is San José's only park featuring an extensive sand beach and swim area, supervised by lifeguards. Visitors can enjoy a range of other water activities including fishing, boating (no power boats), windsurfing and paddle boating. Swimming starts Memorial Day weekend and continues through Labor Day weekend. The swim area is open Wednesday through Sunday, closed Monday and Tuesday

Let me know if anyone wants to set up a group swim sometime...if schedules permit it would be great to get together...Open water swims sort of scare me, so would be nice to get some more practice in.

Unfortunately, you're supposed to stay within the cordoned off area.

Any estimate on length?  25y? 50y?  And water temp this time of year?

thanks!

I'm not a good judge of distance.. feels like > 50 easy. It's not a perfect rectangle.

It's a little bit cool but bearable.

Not too many options in San Jose , specifically , that I know of at least .

While Lake Almaden gets a lot of flak for being "green" , I think your should try it when they open it up since everyone's tolerance is different. Last year I had gone there for a couple of swims before SJIT and it didn't feel too bad ... yes , it probably helped that the water level was reasonable

Also, I second the RWS location. I was training with TNT last year and we'd go up there for our group OWS swims all the time . It's nice and isolated so not too much of boat/surfer traffic and its a nice mile to the bridge and back (if I remember right) ... the stench is not overpowering but definitely present .

not sure about the Sofitel location but there's an entry point right next a tech company that works really well ... let me know if anyone needs more info.

I was thinking of tentatively scheduling 3 different swims over the next couple months...If anyone that has swam these locations want to help out that would be great!  If not we will explore on our own!  These dates are all flexible, if anyone wants to suggest something different, please do so.  I am not sure what time each park opens...will research that...but was thinking of something in the morning 10am or 11am...Let me know if people are interested

saturday 4/19 -  going to the fremont quarry lake area.

Saturday  5/10 - Doing the Redwood shores area

Saturday 5/31 - Lake almaden (it opens the weekend before)
