Subject: How Do I Get the Urine Smell Out of my Shoes?
So I took the idea of practicing a little too far! While training for Eagleman yesterday out in Cambridge, MD I finally overcame my inability to pee on the bike. Unfortunately, I forgot the advice about holding your foot away from the bike. As a result, I ended up with a relieved bladder and a shoe full of urine. UGH!! To make matters worse, I inexplicably left the shoes in my car overnight.

Any ideas on how to get the smell out of my shoes?

Not speaking from experience here mind you but I'd try "Natures Miracle" it's made for cat urine which is nasty stuff. It works well. We had a cat who passed recently who had bladder issues. Can't say I'm planning on trying it myself though.

This stuff works really good on smells.....it managed to take the horrible smell out of stinky tennis shoes.

My first thought was "don't put it in there in the first place" but no doubt you thought of that too...

Sorry, no idea but you did make me laugh today - thanks!

First, congrats on getting over an important hurdle.

Second, if you will note my sig line, I am an expert at such things ...

Bike shoes were relatively easy to get pee smell out of, as opposed to running shoes.

One delicate/cold cycle in the wash using Penguin Sport Wash, shoes opened all up and dried in the sun ... voila, pee smell gone.

Good luck!

My time working in a convent taught me basically one thing - mothballs will kill any smell.

Of course, you probably don't want to smell like those either.

Do people take off their cleats or leave them on since they have been 'infected?'

BTW, the guy at my local running store said you should never dry your shoes in the sun. The stink becomes permanent when you dry them in the sun. I don't recall the science of why this happens but I no longer dry my shoes in the sun and I also never have stinky shoes anymore. On the other hand, in the past I've dried sneakers in the sun and wound up with stinky sneakers. I kept washing them to get rid of the stink, kept putting them in the sun to dry ... ended up tossing them in the garbage because they were good 'n stinky!

Bike shoes aren't running shoes but I imagine the principal is the same.

BEST place to dry your shoes is open the laces and place on their side in front of the refridgerator with the warm air blowing into the open shoe.  Over night usually does it.  Have used this for years with running shoes and the kids shoes of all kinds.

However, if you wash them before you dry them in the sun, there is no stink therefore no problem.  I believe that the "no drying in the sun" rule of thumb is for soggy stinky shoes.

HAH! No, he said no sun drying after washing them. (Who would toss dirty shoes in the sun to dry? Yuck!) Wash them, then just set them indoors and let them air dry.

I don't know why the sun is a problem. I just know I followed his advice and my shoes don't stink.  Your mileage may vary.

I have to admit, I was close to becoming a member of the yellow socks brigade on the run on saturday. Couldn't find a place to stop and hide, finally made it to the turn and my GOD they had a single porta potty, but if they didn't. There would have been yellow and pink socks. I was done.

How do you get over the embarassment??

I have experience in this....my husband soaks my offending bike shoes in a bleach solution and take the insoles out. Then we put newspapers in them to help get the water out, set them outside to dry.

Going forward they will stink more often and more easily...at least mine do.

I have the forgetful habit of after a race leaving them overnight in my tri bag..big mistake as they grow some nasty stuff that smells really really bad.

If you nailed your under the seat bag, I wash mine and set it out to dry.

Here's what you do, put the shoes back on you feet, and jog down to the local dog park. Run wind sprints through the dog park, 10 sets of 100 yards with a 45 second RI should do nicely. Make sure you start on the far left of the park and after each sprint move a few steps to your right, cover as much ground as possible. After your run through the dog park set the shoes out in the sun to dry. I promise you will not be bothered by the smell of urine anymore.
