Subject: Plantar fasciitis...has anyone tried this thing?
Found a link for some kind of foot bandage from an advertiser (Pattstrap.com) right here on the BT website.

http://pattstrap.com/psc-pronation-spring-control-p-34.html

So I clicked on the link to find out more info. They have some kind of foot bandage that is supposed to help relieve heel pain from PF. Seems kind of expensive ($32) for what looks like a simple bandage that wraps around the arch. I read all of the customer reviews...most were positive, but there were a few negative responses on it. Has anyone here on BT actually tried this "PCS" (pronation spring control) bandage? And if so, have you had any luck with it? I am at a point where I'm *almost* willing to try anything to get some relief from my chronic heel pain. But before I drop the $32 for this thing, I'd like to hear if anyone on this forum has actually given it a try. Thanks!

Linda

I have not tried it, but now that I have seen it I am going to try it!

$32 is absolutely nothing compared to the potential years of pain and lost training.  Trust a person who spent four years sidelined by a crappy knee.  I literally tried EVERYTHING out there no matter what it cost.  And I ended up having surgery because none of them worked.

$32 is actually really cheap when you think about how much medical care can cost.

I sent them an e-mail because I'm between two sizes.  I want to know whether tight or loose is the way to go.  And of course, I'm in the Middle East so it will take 10 days to get here once I finally order it.  So, in about two weeks I should be able to let you know what I think.  It might take longer than that to finally decide if it worked though.

Is this not just a fancy (and expensive) way to strap the foot?  Seems to me that you could just use some cheap bandage to support the arch - this is what I did and it worked just fine.

i had my plantar operated on a couple summers ago. i tried an arch support for awhile. it didn't help my much. a podiatrist (sp) had me try a boot to sleep in too. the damn thing was so uncomfortable i couldn't fall asleep.

This wrap looks a lot like the tape job my doc does for my pf, which feels great when it's on, but does fall off eventually.

I hate that stupid sock thing he has me sleep with.  Most nights it gets torn off around 1 or 2 just so I can sleep....rrrrrr

I've got PF right now, and that thing you linked to reminds me of the tape job my PT has done on my foot several times. The taping raised up my arch to add some support to it. She used a sticky brown medical tape, and it is waterproof so it would last about a week before taking it off.

I'd try and learn the taping technique, as you can keep doing it over and over again for pennies, and throw it away rather than worry about keeping it clean.

I am also using the Strassburg Sock which is weird, but not uncomfortable to me. My new $350 orthotics are supposed to be the answer to my PF problem. So far I am still uncomfortable, but I am optimistic...

I have been doing two things with my PF, first stretching the leg / calf on a stair, next rolling on a big foam roller every morning and evening.

When I have any pain after a run or during the day I have a tennis ball and roll it under the foot during the day, sometimes with ice if I can.

I will say the pain is getting better, so we will see -

I disagree with an above poster that tape costs "pennies".  Most good athletic tapes I've seen are a couple of bucks a roll.  Over the course of a summer you could completely come out even AND such a device eliminates the "oops factor" of taping incorectly.

My strassbourg sock gets torn off in the middle of the night a lot too...it's comfortable enough to fall asleep in, but sometime during the night it starts to hurt my upper calf below the knee (too tight) and sometimes my toes.  The boot doesn't work at all.  It puts my whole foot to sleep (and subsequent pain) in under an hour.  Besides, the sock fit better in my luggage for this little six month trip I'm on.

Oh, and another thing.  Something like this PSC thing isn't necessarily a temporary control.  It's like wearing a knee brace.  Sometimes you need a little support while the injured area 1. heals and 2. strengthens itself.  The goal is to be able to exist without it.  But sometimes you need a little help.

I am recovering from PF I had prolotherapy and wear "yoga toes" for about an hour at night and flex and extend the toes. I also roll my foot on a soup can (simislar to the tennis ball therapy) and pick-up marbles with my toes all in an effort to stregnthen the plantar muscle. It seems to be working for me and I realize everybody is different. The only advice I can offer is to keep trying things until you find what works best for you. I also try to run on soft surfaces as much as possible which of course isn't possible during a race.

Good luck to all who are recovering and dealing with the effects of PF along with me and have a great race season!

A few bucks and some common sense can go a long way to help in this situation. Plus, as I said before, you wear the tape for a few days or more, and throw it away, therefore it will be easier to keep your feet clean.

again..but do some research into a contributing cause of PF- the 3 calf muscles attach to the foot- if they are "stuck together" & tight /shortened etc..unles you deal with this factor it seems you may be treating the symptom , but maybe not one of the causes...just a thought

No different than wearing a cast to let a broken bone heal. That does nothing to address the cause, but it would take longer to heal properly without it. Per my practitioners, I've alleviated the cause (tight calves) and now need to address the symptoms.

I've been suffering with PF for 18 months now, gone through long layoffs, PT, extensive stretching, wearing the boot and the sock, active release, chiropractory, prescribed insoles, and God know what else. Only with taping have I finally been able to run again without it getting worse. I pay $8 for six rolls, and have used less than two packs in four months. So, yeah, like pennies per use.

Looking at this device, it doesn't appear to give the same support as taping, but who knows.

Sorry to hear you've been dealing with PF for so long, Bear! I am coming up on 11 months although I didn't have a diagnosis and therapy until several months ago. Per my coach's advice i just ordered the Trigger Point Technology kit for dealing with PF. I am hopeful the ball and rollers will get my leg muscles where they need to be.

no have not tried it.  Stretch, ice, stretch, heel cups/heel lifts, stretch, night splinting,  stretch, NSAIDs, sometimes injection and then stretch some more.   Some podiatrists are using ECSWT (extra coperal shock wave therapy) with some success as well.  FOr those of you with pain for long periods of time I might suggest that you be sure you do not have a calcaneal stress fracture.

bear..great that taping is allowing you to run! did you have a practitioner show you how or how did you figure out best way to tape? sounds like you still hurt despite all the interventions?do you still have pain in the a.m. even after all the other treatments?di you use the triggerpoint stuff at all? & do you still do the stretching atc as a "lifetime' balance thing ? sorry that's a lot of questions, but  all is helpful!

I'm going to say that I still have the PF, but really, I'm not sure what's "normal" anymore, and what is "pain." There is a perceived ache in the spot where the fascia connects to the heel, I'm not going to test it at this point to see if it gets worse without the taping and other treatment I'm using.

Never used the triggerpoint stuff, I'm trying to get an answer to see if my insurance or at least my flex-spend will pay for it.

Not sure what "the stretching atc as a "lifetime' balance thing" means, but I do make a point to stretch the calves several times a day.

It  came in the mail and I've been wearing it as much as possible for about a week...and I have to say I noticed HUGE pain relief from even the first day.  I'm not sure if it's just keeping the stress on my poor heel to a minimum...but the heel feels SOOOOOOOOOO much better.  I used to wear my strassbourg sock all night and still have pain getting out of bed in the morning.  Now, I still wear the sock all night but wear this thing whenever I'm walking around or working out and now I have almost NO pain getting out of bed in the morning.  It can't be coincidence.

I plan on wearing it for awhile then gradually trying to wean myself off and see what happens...

I ended up with a medium since I was right inbetween sizes, but I might write back and ask for a small since it's definitely a bit too big for me.  I have a lot of excess left that wraps under my foot and the extra bulk sometimes gets in the way.

The Pattstrap thing looks a lot like the Airheel that I've been wearing and I can honestly say that I think my PF is being healed (no pun intended) when I wear it faithfully.  You can Google Aircast (which is the company) and order an Airheel.  It is a soft sock like ankle thingy that has air pockets on the back of your ankle (also good for achilles tendonitis which I had before the PF) and an air pocket in your arch just in front of your heel.  A little tube runs between the two pockets and as you run/walk/bike there is a massaging type motion from one air pocket to the other.  It feels wonderful!  I keep it beside my bed and put it on first thing in the morning if the PF is hurting and make sure I wear it with Birkenstocks or some hard soled shoe/sandle.  I to work (when it's hurting) and wear it riding and running.  I got one from a sports med doc in Gainesville who treats the Gators and also ordered another one online for around $40.00.

Doing eccentric heel raises is also key along with both stretching and strengthening the calves.  There are some good exercises too that help strengthen the muscles in your arch believe it or not.  Also, on running days, I take a frozen water bottle in an insulated lunch box and after my run, on my drive home, I take it out and rub my foot on it for the 15 minute ride home (of course, my PF is in my left foot so this works - dont' think that would work if it's in your right foot and your'e trying to drive...)  Tennis balls are fantastic to roll around on - roll your foot around until the pain begins to loosen up and go away.   When I do all this regularly I am nearly painfree.  The most painful but I think successful treatment I've tried has been an ice bath for my foot.  It is excruciatingly painful but did seem to start me on a course of being more pain free.  Of course, when I slack off, I pay.  Good luck to everyone with your PF - it's nasty!
