Subject: Plantar Fasciitis ?
I have been having issues with my right foot and now for the 3x I experienced "this pain" in the arch of my right foot while swimming.......yes swimming. The pain is on the inside of my arch and it felt like the bone wanted to come thru my skin. I could actually feel the bone pressing against the bottom of my foot.

Anyone else have / had / conquer this issue?

** I have this act up from time to time on runs, but the most pain ( Holy *Hit ) was while swimming after 30+ min **

HELP

My wife just got over Plantar Fasciitis, and it wasn't fun.  She had to go to an orthopedic specialist, get a cortisone shot in her foot, and get special arches made for her shoes.  She had to get two sets, one for her regular every day shoes and one for her running shoes.  She also got a special boot that she had to wear at night to keep her foot stretched out.

She started get pain back in November and it was March before she was back to 100%.  She had to stay off it for a least a month, and just ease her way back into running again.  The doctor told her to take it easy and to stop running if it started to bother her again.  Eventually the tendon would heal, but it's a lengthy process.

I apologize, it's probably not what you wanted to hear, but if you truly have it, I wish you good luck and make sure to get a good orthopedic doctor.

Doesn't sound that much like PF, which is a sore spot on the underside of the heel where the fascia connects more often than a pain on the inside of the arch.

Bu tthen I'm not a doctor, just a frequent sufferer. Maybe a real doctor might help?

Are you sure that isn't just a bad cramp in your foot?  Painful foot cramps while swimming are a common malady mentioned on here.  Try not pushing off against the walls, or at least pushing off much more gingerly.  And don't point your toes coming off the wall, either, but flex your foot the other way (high drag) to stretch the bottom of your foot a little when coming off the wall.

x2 This doesn't sound like PF to me. Standing and running would be more painful, and the pain would be near the heel. I have had PF for years and don't feel anything when I swim.

Foot cramps, maybe? Are you well hydrated and stretched out?

I am also not a doctor, yada yada yada...

By the location of the pain, sounds like a normal foot cramp to me....

Does a normal foot cramp exhibit the feeling of the bone coming thru the skin? I actually felt the bone pulsating by my inner foot right where the arch meets the heel? You could see / feel the bone. I hope this is only a cramp, but I’ve had a few issues running as well.
So this is normal for extended pool swims ? Well not normal, but a known issue ?

It might be a good idea to get a doctor to look at it, in case there's something else going on. If it is pf, have you tried this stretch from the Runner's World website?

Bones don't pulsate...  Wink

Anyway, I agree with others here -- that doesn't sound like PF. I might suspect a dislocated cuboid bone, but then I'd think you would have pain (and a LOT of it) around the backside of your outer ankle bone and up into your outer calf (I've had this -- NOT pleasant). It's worth getting checked out by a pro. I was told that some people live with a dislocated cuboid for years and don't even know it...

I've had the more rare version of PF where it's along the arch [diagnosed by a podiatrist] and have had some pain during/after a long swim, especially if I'm going hard and pushing hard off the wall. Effectively it's the same as standing in place and jumping. It doesn't feel like what you're describing, though. It also hurts sometimes when I'm on the bike or if I'm walking around barefoot or in a very flat pair of shoes [Old Navy flip-flops, for example]. What you're describing sounds like a broken bone, a dislocation, or a stress fracture, but it would seem like you'd have more pain running than swimming. Time to head to a specialist!

Edit: to get rid of the pain mid-swim I would push off with my heel only and not use the ball of my foot for propulsion. It will slow you down but it sure feels a lot better.
