I'm considering it. Gotta get the wife's approval. We may have vacation plans that weekend.

I'd love to do it, but I'm sticking with sprints this year.

But I think I'll be there to cheer you all on.

the course should be a great course... the bike will have some hilly sections, the run will be 100% flat... the swim should be interesting, hope for ZERO rain the weeks leading up to the race otherwise this swim could be a no go, that river gets a TON of rain water and could make the swim unsafe and unhealthy.... if no major rain occurs you will have the current going against you only once (shouldn't be strong) if you don't count having the current on either shoulder, otherwise it would be 3 times, so may be hard to swim a straight line with the current pushing you to the left or right...

for philly in particular? i'd say train on similar terrain (rolling hills on the bike - and if you ask me there are a few very short but steep-ish hills; essentially flat run)

we cross posted i've heard from people in the know that if it rains three or fewer days before the race they will replace the swim with a run.

really.... i talked to the race director once or twice and told him to keep his eye on that water..... not that he doesn't know this already....

it would be a shame if they couldn't pull off that swim, cause Philly does need a nice tri in the local area...

I think you and or your husband are doing a few races together.....

well, someone from endless pools told me about the possible swim cancellation. i think it would have to be a fairly significant rain, but they're not taking any chances.

yes - one or both of us are doing quite a few. and my husband's shop is partnered with pirhana for the greater atlantic series, so it's likely we'll be at a few more events even if neither of us is racing. they have a team, too, and are hoping to have a good first year...

I'll be there, it will be my first oly distance, into my third week of training.

I just checked the http://www.phillytri.com/site and it looks like registration closed as of Jan 20th.

My wife and I are signed up as well.  Our first Oly.  I would hate to see it change from a swim to a run...does this happen often in triathlons?

no, it doesn't happen often - but it does happen occasionally.

i can think of two off the top of my head - in 2003 the New York City triathlon (also a large-scale olympic triathlon) had to ditch the swim and do a duathlon. and i believe last year the delaware diamondman (half-iron distance) had to ditch the swim.

as someone who's a stronger swimmer than runner, it does kind of suck. but it's for your safety.

I will be doing this one with Team in Training. At the kick off party for Team in Training, the Race director was there, and did say rain in the three days before will cancel the swim in the river, more due to chemical run-off into the water lowering the water to unsafe levels.

there's no confirmation on the website yet, but i heard from a good source (okay. my husband. shhh.) that they have changed or will be changing the swim course - to make it point to point, WITH the current.

yes, indeed, fast fast.

it's partially due to the number of first timers, but it will also make the race more competitive. the course they had set up, going against the current for the most part, really made little sense.

so, watch for confirmation on the website. but my husband's been talking to the race director about other things, so i believe the information is pretty good.

makes sense to me... i remember thinking oh that's going to be a tough current to deal with for the first timers....

they had a little write up in the paper about the race yesterday... didn't say a whole lot
