Subject: How many calories per hour?
I love to know that working out burns calories...the problem is, I don't believe the estimates of those on-line calorie calculators.
For example, most say I would burn between 1200 and 1400 calories per hour cycling at a speed of 16 plus mph (I weigh about 220). It just doesn't seem like I'm spending that kind of energy when I cycle. Also, when I concentrate on cycling for a period of weeks or months, I don't lose the kind of weight that I should if I'm really burning so many calories.

So my questions are:
Are those activity calculators accurate?
If not, any ideas which is the most accurate?

Don

Hey Don, I tested the www.caloriesperhour.com calculator and found it to be pretty accurate for my statistics.  To test it, I wore my heart rate monitor and ran on the treadmill for a specified amount of time and speed.  I took the calorie reading off of my Polar heartrate monitor and it came pretty close.  No whether that translates to your weight, height, age, etc.  I don't know.

You might want to look into a HRM with a calorie counting feature.  If you do, be sure to get one that asks you to enter all of your data.  Those are more accurate, but still estimates.

I just started using a Polar S725 (LOVE IT) and the OwnCalorie index seems low to me as compared say to an exercise bike. I feel like the Polar should be more accurate, but feel like the machine has more info i.e. wattage output which should give a more accurate reading.

Any thoughts? I would love to put this to rest in my head.

The more experienced you are, the better your body is at burning less fuel.

You tend to burn more calories in your first marathon then any after that.

Temperature, Heartbeat, Bodyfat Composition, weight, etc all figure in to the exact number.

I just got a Polar (s210) which also has owncal.

I'm going with the counts from my hrm because it has more information about me (weight, age, approximate activity level etc) than any machine at the gym or any online calculator has.  Since my hrm has more information I'm HOPING that it all goes into whatever equation it's using.

Along those lines, I swam for 1 hour 8 minutes today, and according to my hrm I bunred around 530 cals.  WHAT?  Only 530?  Surely it's wrong.  So I come home, go to an online calculator and...

528 calories burned.

I can run for an hour, feel like I had an "ok" workout and burn somewhere around 675 cals.   Or I can swim for an hour, be completely wiped out, and burn 530 cals.

Mom was right, life ISN'T fair.

According to my Polar HR monitor, on very intense spinning workouts, I burn 850-900 Cals/Hour. 1200 to 1400 seems high to me... According to my experience, the best tool nowadays is a HR monitor watch (quite accurate and not too expensive...).

These calculations are fairly accurate at calculating caloric output.  Multiply the number times your weight and distance for each discipline.  It takes a little algebra to break the distances down to yards for swimming, but keep in mind that 1750 yards equals a mile.

Running: 0.653 calories/mile/pound
Cycling: 0.28 calories/mile/pound
Swimming: 2.93 calories/mile/pound
