Subject: 13 weeks to a 13 hour ironman
I posted this question before and did not get many replies. I was wondering if anyone has ever done this plan to their first Ironman. It is a well known plan a supposedly many have done it. Just wondering how it worked for you guys and what your times were. I am planning on doing it for Ironman Madison next year. I don't have much time to train due to the fact that I don't want to get divorced. Any advice or stories would be appreciated. Thanks.

That makes sence, it's an old plan and you do get slower as you get older.

I didn't personally use it but a friend used it for her first IM (IMFL) and she was 13 weeks to a 12:51 Ironman. She loved the plan and is constantly recommending it.

I'm curious as to what level of fitness you should have to do a 13 weeks/13 hour IM plan?? I am assuming this is not a couch to IM plan but does the plan assume Oly or half experience? Sorry, don't mean to highjack your thread....just curious.

I did one sprint this summer and it would take me a lot more than 13 weeks to be ready to do a full IM.

Here is the link to the plan.  The top of the plan describes the fitness level needed to start the plan.

It's a solid plan and many athletes have used it in training for an IM.  It is probably the lowest volume you will find in a training plan so if time is a consideration, it could be a good choice for you.  Keep in mind it is designed for experienced triathletes and when you start the plan, the first week should look pretty easy; if you are stretching to hit the week 1 totals the plan is probably going to build too quickly for you.

The one thing that I've heard several times about this plan is that athletes have felt that there is too little bike volume and too much swim volume; depending on where your strengths and weaknesses lie this may be something to keep in mind.

I followed it, although added a few weeks to the front, making it a 16 week plan

13:10 at IM FL

I started that plan shortly after doing a 70.3

Thamks for the posts. I think I will be alright with the plan. I have doen 3 marathons, 3 HIM, 1 OLY, and several sprints. I feel I have a good base to work off of as well as a good history with racing. Hopefully it works for me. Wish me luck!

This plan was written by Gale Bernhardt who is a well known triathlete and coach and has been publishing training plans like this in triathlete magazine for a long time.

She has authored several books, including "training plans for mutlisport athletes" which is basically a compiliation of many articles like this...not sure if the 13/13 is in the book.

I bought Gale Bernhardt's book on Amazon two weeks ago and it is awesome. There are about ten great training plans ranging from "52 weeks to an Olympic" to "13 weeks to a sub-13 hours Ironman" and everything in between. Plus a lot of info on swimming plans and heart rate based exercising. It's really a great book, and costs about a third of what a good online training plan will cost.

Hey Moab -

It wouldn't hurt to check out Don Fink's BeIronFit program too. He offers 3 different plans, each peaking with more or less volume. Each plan is 30 weeks, and I know you're looking at 13 weeks, but speaking from my own experience I've used Gale's plans and Don's plans and for me personally I prefer Don's "sequencing" of workouts and overall plan. In other words, not just one particular workout or volume, etc. but rather how the plan makes me feel week to week the way the workouts are synchronized. Maybe with your current base you could pick up the plan in a later week? Frankly in week 30 it's only 6 hours of training anyway, so with any decent base you could potentially skip some initial weeks. Just another option...
Oh - I used the BIF plan for my first Ironman, IM WI in 09. I followed the "30 week competitive plan" and it was great for me. Although I finished in 14:10, I had a smile the entire day.

Cheers,
Tim

I'm dubious...

Maybe for an experienced triathlete with a lot of solid base behind them...  It also depends on the course.

I train a LOT more than this plan, and for more weeks, and I don't think I will hit 13 hours at IMSG.  I also have a IM in the books and several HIM's, so I have been arround the block once or twice.

But like any canned plan, it works for some well, for others not at all, and for most, an average fit.

I used Gale Bernhardt 13 week plan -  http://www.cluboceano.com/13.htm. This is a GREAT plan for anyone who needs to keep peace under the roof.

End Result 13:26.

So do we want people to search through and revive old threads or do we want people to start new threads about the same topics? Which is it?

I guess I'm the silly one for not checking the post date of the original poster each time I open a thread...  I should know better.

You've been around here long enough to know that when someone posts something and they get told to search the old threads, the responders get (rightly) slammed.
