We were talking abotut this race today at work.   One of my co-workers was bummed about missing the swim at Steelhead and was going to Tawas.

Myself I ran my first 3D event this past weekend.  I only have one other race to comapre it to, but it seemed to run ok.

I've been flip-flopping about this more than Obama and McCain...

I think I'll stick with Tawas and just take the risk.  If I have to keep an extra bottle on the bike, and other nutrition in T-area, I can live with that.  They can't keep me down ...

Hmm. Toyota Deer Creek, huh?  That's plausible. Not as a participant, of course. I don't race anymore. But if I did....

I don't blame you not wanting to toss out the $$$ 3D is charging for this race. It's a beautiful area, if the roads are anywhere as nice as the roads I rode from Harrisville down to Oscoda and areas west of Wurtsmith, you'll be happy with the ride. If I didn't get lost I would've had a chance to check out parts of River rd and Monument road, oops.

Alright, I've stopped waffling (not the crunching, tasty kind with syrup).  I'm going to stick with the Tawas HIM.  Where are folks staying?  The campground would be great, but the wifey doesn't want to camp.  GRRRRR.

So, I could use lodging advice from anyone racing or just familiar with the area.

Its two hours to Tawas for me, and 4 hours to Mt. Sterling.  I can see why it would be a little more even for you.

I'm not sure on the registration, but I did see that OH was a small HIM in past years.  If you email 3D and ask about registered folks, would you post it here?  I may know one other person going, outside of the MI BT folks.  (We need a name.  Is the MI Mafia still in use?)

On the 3d site it list an Oly: http://www.3disciplines.com/index.php?option=com_events&task=view_d...

But the sprint distance listed is: 500, 20k, 5k

When you go to Active the sprint and oly are under the same button for $65, not sure how 3d would know how many to expect for each race.

Might want to send them an email to confirm the oly.

This is a response I got to an email that I sent them a while ago...

We are going to get those maps up for you. We are actually going to ride the course one more time tomorrow and then we will put the map on the site. We will have 2-3 aid stations on the bike and aid stations each mile on the run.

Happy Training and Good Health!

.... as it is, I am concerned that they won't get this much course support out there, but I am planning to work around that. I'm not there to finish on the podium, I'm there to survive, so if I have to carry an extra bottle on the bike and run, so be it. I'll be prepared to do it, and make a decision as I see the support on the course.
I'll be booking a cabin sometime this week. When I find the best value out there, I'll post it in here too.

The course maps are finally up on the website.  The bike is very similar to what they originally planned, but the run is totally different.  I think I would have preferred running out to the point, but I'll take whatever at this point.

I'm going to be staying at the Northland Beach Cottages.  Its about .7 miles east of the T-area.  I think its on the bike path too, so I can just ride down in the morning.

In case others are interested, here is my short list for places to stay.  Mind you, I've never stayed at any of them.  This was based on websites, and phone calls.  All of the cottages are close to the race site.

Cabana Cove

Northland Beach Cottages

Riptide Inn

Bayview Resort

These are all cottages on the water.  I didn't want a hotel.  The hotels in the area are a Days Inn, Captains Quarters, and the Tawas Beach Resort.  The last one looking the best because it was on the water and it has a pool.  I think has a restaurant on site too.

The campgrounds are supposed to be pretty nice too.  The wife didn't want to camp this one though.  Too bad.  I love camping.

I'll be heading up pretty early on Friday to swim and ride the run course.  I may even drive the bike course if time permits.  If anyone wants to get together for any or all, I'm game.

 ... Now I'm getting excited!

It's looking like I will be doing the sprint. Tawas is a beautiful area. It will be nice to be able to see the bottom during a swim for a change. I'll probably be camping at the State Park. I'll be traipsing around the State the week after that, fishing in various rivers a harbors for Salmon.

See you there

I was at packet pick-up for the Sanford and Son tri today and talked to Kenny of 3 Disciplines about the half iron at Tawas.  He said the number of entrants so far is a little over a hundred.  He also said there is no way they are going to cancel it.  He really likes this venue and really wants to grow this race so it will be run no matter what.  They have some big plans for it, so i dont think anyone has any worries over it being cancelled.  He also said the only races they have ever cancelled were some of the x-tri's they have  done.  They dont like to cancel.  If you read the webpage for the Tawas event they have the course marked now and give a long description of what it is like, as well as the run.  He sounded very excited about this race, i think everything will be just fine.

Possibly buy? but I would like to rent or borrow first. That way I can get a better understanding of how they fit or feel in the water before buying.

Try and email 3 Disciplines.  If I'm not mistaken last year they were offering wetsuits to rent before each race.  I am not sure if it's happening this year but they might know someone who will rent you one.
