Master 2356 Fenton, MI | Subject: Tawas Triathlon Festival - HIM I signed up for this race months ago as a carrot to get some training done. I've contacted 3D a couple of times to see if I could get some course maps, so I could ride and research the routes. Basically, they've put me off each time, saying its coming later in the week, with nothing ever showing up. First question, does anyone have maps or know the route? They say that the route is marked if you look on the roads. Any locals have knowledge of it? Second, does anyone think this race might get canned from a lack of registration? Its a first year distance at this event, and I have a bad feeling about it. I know they (3D) cancelled a bunch of mid and late season events last year for that reason. There is a better race in OH on that Sunday. I'm wishing that I would have registered for the other race now. |

Expert 937 Traverse Cityish | Subject: RE: Tawas Triathlon Festival - HIM Hearing this just makes my frustrations with 3d grow. I personally feel they need to cut back the number of races they do and focus on making the ones they have better. Carl's Family tri was the best organized event I have seen and it was a result of the YMCA managing the majority of the race and volunteers with Kenny's primary focus being timing and prizes. The combination of this with the low capacity made for a hell of a fun event. Personally, I don't think 3d has their act together well enough to pull off a HIM distance race unless it's on a small, multi loop course and the participant cap is set very low. |

Champion 9430 No excuses! | Subject: RE: Tawas Triathlon Festival - HIM Not surprised at all to hear this. I will never do a 3D race again after only doing one of theres (HIM last year in Grand Haven) They have the market on Michigan racing yet they seem to constantly screw things up. Either hire on more help to make things smoother and get things taken care of or cut back your races and focus on those. Sorry rant over...for now |

Master 2356 Fenton, MI | Subject: RE: Tawas Triathlon Festival - HIM Glen, Mike, I'm with you guys. Like I said, I wish I hadn't signed up for it. I'm seriously considering just chalking up the race fees as a loss. Then I could do my first HIM in OH at the Toyota event. The saving grace here, is that I saw that they were going to be working with another organizer for the event. I can't find the info on it though. If anyone has a link, please share it. |

An end of season event that must be on your calendar. New to the sport, or not there is something for everyone all downtown Tawas. Beautiful Lake Huron crystal clear swim in Tawas Bay, bike on the pine tree lined roads outside of Tawas and run out to lighthouse point and back. All coming to an end with a barbecue beach side with a party Saturday evening. We are excited about this venue and look forward to the future. We will be making several trips up there on Monday/Tuesdays to get the course marked for your training purposes. Register now to secure your Tech shirt and gear bag. Good news Matt - you have already secured your Tech shirt. |

A few weeks ago there was a thread on 3D and the Interlochen OLY fiasco. Lots of late registrants coupled with a lot of no-shows for volunteers on top of very windy conditions made for an unsafe swim after buoys broke free and at least one swimmer had to be helped by another competitor because the safety people didn't notice them in distress. No marshalls on the bike course that I ever saw because the quality of the pace lines out there were text book. A few people contacted Kenny and he blew them off saying the event was a success. |

While I was not at that race, it is part of what spurred me to address this. I'm pretty torn at this point. On one hand, I've paid for tawas, its relatively close to home. (under two hours) I can head up there on a Saturday morning to ride the course and not think twice about it. Its on a Saturday, which works nicely for our family schedule. However, I'm pretty concerned that this race won't even happen, or it might be a clusterfck, or I'll have to basically be self-supporting out there, without knowing I need to in advance. I don't know much about the Sunday race. Either way, I don't want to be out there in a field of 200. I'd like to have targets to push me along and keep my mind off the physical effects. I talked to Jamie about going to Oh instead. She's game, but we'd leave the kids at home. After seeing the boredom on lots of kids faces, I won't drag my kids to a HIM. The olympic distance is the max for them. She doesn't want to camp though. So, I'll have to check into the accommodations around there. Perhaps a suite, split a couple ways? |
