Anybody doing this triathlon in Springfield on Aug. 24? I am signed up for the mini. For anyone that has done this race, what is the course like?

David, Let me know if you are serious about heading out to the course this weekend. I would like to ride it again before the race. I am thinking early... Like 6:30/7:00am start time. Just let me know.

The course is a gradual rolling course and I would expect the same for the mini course.

As for you Oly and HIM people out there. Here is my summary. Sorry for it being a bit long.
First Section: Miles 0-7/25-30 on Old Columbus Rd.
The road leading to the left onto Rt 54 is okay... Some bumps... just watch. It is a gradual uphill about a mile to half a mile at a time with some flats that you can use for recovery but mostly slightly up. Mile 5/28.5 you start the climb up to Rt 54.
Second Section: Miles 7-12/31-36 on Rt 54
Once you take your left onto 54 the road is perfect... newly paved and lined. You still are climbing up, more steeply to about Mile 8/31. Then you rocket down by mile 9/33 crusing at an easy 30mph+. By mile 10/34 it is time to climb the mile back up to the town of Catawba. Once in town it flatens out and you can recover on the quick right and then an left. As soon as you take that left it rolls for a little more and then you take a dangerous left onto Neer. Neer is a very tight, chip and seal, country road
Third Section: Miles 13-22/36-45 on Neer, Vernon Ashbury, Mahr and Moorefield.
This is where it gets confusing. You will need to know where you are going in this section. The roads SUCK. Chip and seal, bumpy, keep your grip light or you will get shaken to death by the end. As soon as you take the left onto Neer you are going down hill. I did not push this section for the meer fact of the road quality. HIM riders keep on Neer, Oly riders will take a left onto an unmarked, chip and seal, Vernon Ashbury Rd. Straight on Neer you are still going down hill and roll up at mile 14/37.5, shoot down mile 15/38 and turn around once you reach the end of the road. By now you finally get it...What goes down... Must come up. It became a mantra for me. Make your way back to Vernon Ashbury at Mile 16.5/40. Vernon Ashbury is rolling (go figure...). You take a veering right onto Neer (again...confusing as hell let me tell you... Didn't you just turn around at the end of Neer??) just trust me at Mile 18/41.5. The road improves and is definately a two lane road. You will then take a left onto Mahr, near the turn around point on Neer... again... Confusing. I thing this is where they will put the aid station... or at least I hope so. Mile 19/42.5 you start climbing again... to only go down, again.
Last Section: Miles 21.5-25/45-end (my estimation is well short of 56mi... like 51)
The turn onto Grant is a bit technical at mile 21.5/45. You are going downhill after the roller on Mahr/Moorefield. It begins to sweep right and you need to turn left. This turn is greater than 90 degrees. Watch the people around you so you don't get pushed off the road as it would not be good. As soon as you are on Grant... guess what... you go up another roller that is pretty steep. It kills all your remaining momentum from the turn. Just spin your way up. The rest of Grant is flat to down hill. Right on Old Columbus for Oly or to get back to transition, left to repeat for the HIM.

Other things to note. All of Old Columbus, parts of 54, and most of Grant are very exposed. It is just wide open corn and bean fields. If it is windy... Get ready for a long day on the bike.

The mini is more of an Olympic distance. The sprint is the short one.

Sorry about the miscommunication David... I'm gonna ride on Saturday. I have company coming into town this weekend and it is the only day that works. Get in contact with Dave(Newbz) and see if he is still interested.

My fault all, JChristoff is right, he did say the 9th (saturday) when we started talking about this a few weeks ago. SO, the ride is on Saturday morning for anyone who is intrested.

Not that you couldn't go on Sunday if you wanted.

J.

Thanks for the update on the bike course. I wish I could get over there to ride. I envy you that can. There are going to be alot of BT'ers at this race. Wish we had a sign or something.  Well I know what Tam looks like and Jenn and I are driving over together. And I know David (newbz). So we will just have to go around asking "are you??" Looking forward to it. Everyone have a great weekend.

To those doing the sprint... I just wanted to follow up with what DavidTri's and I saw on the course this weekend.

Mahr is full of rollers. As soon as you take the left onto Moorefield you get to climb the only real notable hill... Moorefield after the hill is a great road where you can cruise on the slight downhill. The rest of the course is just as described above. Watch the turn onto Grant.

For the rest of us (Olys and HIM). It is great course. The hill at mile 8 and mile 10 are nasty. Just don't eat the paste. (ie. race your own race, keep your own pace)

Anyone doing the Duathlon? (5K run, 40K bike, 10K run)...  It will be my first.  I did a practice run at it on Sunday... did a 2:56 with a very poor night before.  I am getting really psyched -- shooting for a 2:45.  I will be really happy with that, it should put me well into my age group.   I will be up on Saturday, from Cincinnati, to pick up my stuff.  I hope to run into some other BT folks...   does anyone have any kind of meeting spot planned for dinner or the like?  I will be flying solo for this event.   Emerson

I am spending the night at a little motel near the park called the Harmony.  I plan to come up on Saturday, get my race numbers, etc. and then just stay in the area.  If you looked at my profile you would see that I live in Tucson but I am in Cincinnati at the moment and go back to AZ in a couple of weeks.  I am looking forward to the race and hopefully meeting some other good BT folks along the way.  I do much of my training alone and I enjoy the time with other athletes...   Emerson

With the cool nights we have been having here recently and days barely getting to 80. It may be wetsuit legal. The only reason it might not be is due to the lack of rain. Just be prepared for both possibilites.

Wetsuit legal just means that it is cooler than 75.

The water will not be cold. It will be nice for the swim. Don't worry. I don't have a wetsuit either and have never raced in one

Colder than 75? That is freezing (without a wetsuit)!

I hope the lake warms up some between now and the 24th!
