I'm sorry for your crash and separation. I hope you heal up quickly.

I had a grade 2 in a crit last year.

I've enjoyed reading this thread as I've got try MTB and if I like it do a Xterra on my what I'd like to do in the future list. I know lots of folks that ride road bikes all spring/summer/fall ride MTB in the woods once it gets cooler/cold as it is more comfortable weather wise to ride in the woods with less wind.

x2 on healing quickly!

It is common for injuries in mountain biking but I've actually known more people to break collarbones and shoulder blades when road riding. The speeds are faster and the pavement is harder!

Anyway, keep riding recreationally and maybe one day you'll find that your confidence has increased and you may want to give it another go.

Glen, with all due respect - and I genuinely mean that - but this is CRAZY!! If this is the norm (separation, broken clavicle, rotator cuff injury, etc. :) , I don't want to be a part of it! I do plan to "recreationally" ride in the woods, but I just think it's too dangerouse to race in the woods. Swimming in a lake is great; running off-road is even fine; but barrelling through the woods full speed is just not for me.

No worries, you got yours out of the way. ;)

I've actually suffered more damage from the road when I was hit by a car, I got a nice torn labrum for my efforts. One of our roadies had his hip pop through his pelvic bone in a crit a couple months back.

Road accidents are less common, but usually much more damaging and painful. Mountain bike accidents are usually just scrapes and bruises though more frequent. You'll find a blend of speed and comfort if you spend enough time on the trail. :)
