I can agree that the 30-45 range is where its at. People in their 20s sneak into the podium but in terms of most spots in the top 20 overall there aren't as many.

All this talk makes me really nervous because I want to try to qualify for Kona at some point in my life and its starting to seem like next year (my last year in 20-24) might be my best shot

20-24 is your best shot. Not a lot of slots but the times are much slower.

30-34, 35-40 followed by 41-45. Its because, us as men are getting older and realize in some cases we need to stay in shape or find a justification for working out. Or maybe its because type-A personalities become more pronounced and we need a reason to beat our chests louder?

More money to throw around as well, combined with life experience also helps out.

Glad I still race 25-30.

As a 20-24 I also thought about maybe going to Kona next year as it would be my last year in the AG. Where 20-24 is weak in your local races(except for that one annoying guy in Houston , in the bigger races it can easly be the most competitive. So Kona slots aren't really easier to get in the 20-24. Our top guys are usually the fastest and we will have less slots.

I'm going with the older age group. The last few races I've been in the 30-34 and 35-39 age groups put up great times across the board, the top 10 are usually finishing right after each other where my AG 25-29 the top 10 are spread out over many minutes.

I'd have to say that they are more experienced.

I'm either the wrong sex or the wrong age.

I find my group, 45-49 males, to be the most competitive group. All those b*stards the same age as me won't get out of my way! Maybe it's because they have years of experience and training, and I just started as an old timer. Of course, those years of experience and training might result in some near-future knee replacements and the like, then I can share in the fun. When I started my training a year ago, I was told I have a 'virgin body'; it hasn't been used and abused yet like the others in my age group.
