I am very happy to say that I became an Ironman on sunday, crossing the finish line in Cologne, Germany.

It was an amazing journey through 8 months preparation, riding for 6000km, running for 3000km and swimming around 300km. And of course reading all your suggestions, threads, etc. which were all useful.

I managed to close in 10h46 and the last 15km of the run were pretty dramatic but I did it and I am happy.

thanks to you all!

Congrats on an awesome race!!! 10:46 is a great time for a first IM. Heck, it's a great time for any Ironman but especially for a first that you really don't know what to expect!!

I hope this is just the first of many for you. Congrats again. BTW - How did you like the venue in Germany? I'd love to plan some family vacations around IM races.

thanks! I took it easy on the bike chasing a great marathon but it was not the case. Ironman is a strange beast which probably will remain unpredictable, more than all other competitions. You need a strong mental focus on the run and you don't have to think "let's cross the finish line and go home!". This is my first impression.

The swim was easier than expected and 1h11 passed pretty fast. I enjoyed the bike because you think to eat and drink every 15mins and this is a kind of "friend" riding with you. But the run...oh men! after 21km you stop running with your legs and you can't wait to cross the line even if you are in a great shape.

That was a non M-dot race and honestly it was a great organization. Bike course fully closed to traffic, nice scenery for the run and the swim in a nice park. I would say bad race pack with just the numbers and nothing else.

As non M-dot race in Europe, the best is Elbaman. No doubts even if I never did it but the organization is unbelievable and the venue is unique in the Elba island, Italy.

I did not do it because the bike course is challanging and I was searching a flat one.

If you want to come over to try one of those, go for Elbaman.

1997 Escape from NY is my favourite movie.

By the way, I went now to check what does 10h46 mean. I looked around some official IM Hawaii qualification and it is unbelievable. You need 9h15 to qualify. Neither if I go with an Harley Davidson I can do it Frown

Better to think Florida 70.3. More doable for me.

I would like to add a message of encouragement for all those are preparing for IM or for who is thinking to start preparing it.

First of all, I can say that if I made it, everybody can make it, in a phisical point of view. Last summer 2007 I was not able to swim more than 1km in the pool and NOT even continously. Maybe I could do a straight 500meters but then stopping and having serious difficulties to go on. Very disappointing for me.

For cycling, I had my MTB for going to the office only and I had an old Trek 1000 road bike in my cellar full of spidernets and mainly never used. I bought it 4 years ago and used it just at that time for 3 or 4 times.

I was mainly a runner, loving this sport and running a lot, let' say an average of 70miles per week.

I said everybody can do it from a phisical point of view.

From a mental point of view is not for everybody I think. I consider myself very strong mentally and adapted already to strong efforts like marathons or similar.

I think, before entering the journey of IM, everybody should learn what is "suffering" from a sport prospective.

For your info, I followed the swim and cycling plans in the Trifuel website. It is really great. For running, I used just my experience partecipating into many races during the 8months. Not from that plan.

In the next experience for 2009 in Austria, I will use one of those from BT. Not yet decided which one. But I am reading Friel book which is great to make a custom plan.
