Subject: Vineman 2009 Full Iron Distance
I am thinking I might be ready for a Full Iron distance race by around August next year (hope springs eternal). And well, I don't think that I want to shell out the $1300 to get into one of the IronmanR races, so I was thinking Vineman might fit the bill. Has anyone here done it that can tell me about the race (level of support, level of challenge etc.)? And ya I will tell my wife that I am thinking about it after I finish my first HIM in 10 days and see how it feels. Also, again does anyone know how fast it sells out. They say registration opens 11/1/08 for the 09 event.

I don't think Vineman has sold out in recent memory. Race reports from the last couple of years are at

Challenging bike ride and run; potential for serious heat; well supported. Worth doing.

I'll be there toeing the starting line next year for my 2nd IM.

It's close to home, and the wife and kids can be there (which they couldn't for IMKY).

I did it this year. Good race with great support. The volunteers even stay past the cut-off time of 16 hours. It is a very well run race.

The only thing I would change about it, is to repave the roads but you can't have a nice course on old less traveled vineyard roads without expecting a few bumps right?

Since the buy two get one free returns for 2009, I may be back.

I am so glad to see the responses.  This will be my first IM and am really getting excited about it.  It is closer to home than any of the others...and more affordable.

I've heard great things.  I'll probably be there for the aqua-bike.  I'm planning on IMAZ in November, so won't be doing the full at Vineman.  And I think it's the 20th anniversary, so it will maybe be even better/bigger than usual?

as someone else already suggested, check out race reports (mine is there from 07).  IMO, it's a relatively easy bike course from a hill/elevation perspective.  Run will be HOT and with some rolling hills which you do on an out and back 3 times.  Actual number who do the race is pretty small, but there are the other events going on at the same time (aquabike, barb's race), etc. so there's a good amount of other racers (but not too many) and spectators.

I did this as my first IM distance race and I've recommended it to other locals as a first IM because the course isn't brutal and it's local.
