Carpinteria Triathlon
65F / 18C
Overcast
Total Time = 2h 30m 34s
Overall Rank = 65/320
Age Group = 20-24
Age Group Rank = 4/8
Pre-race routine:

I woke up and had some tea -- got to transition, set up the back and then chilled out (literally) in the water for a couple minutes.
Event warmup:

Not much, just a little swimming.
Swim
  • 30m 7s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim was pretty good, while at the same time kind of rough. It was probably my best performance (though the time might not reflect it) but there were a couple of tough spots. I felt pretty strong at the beginning until I realized that I was in a whirlpool -- which started to elevate my heart rate -- but stopping was not an option because the moment I slowed down I felt like I was getting crawled over. Well, things calmed down and I actually found a couple feet and my sighting went well. At the turnaround buoy, there was another struggle, got out of it alive. Besides some confusion at one of the buoys, it was smooth sailing in.
What would you do differently?:

Be more aggressive at the outset-- and swim faster
Transition 1
  • 03m 18s
Comments:

Went pretty well
What would you do differently?:

I would have jumped on the bike, but things were wet -- didn't want to risk it

Also, tape Gu to the bike -- I wasted some time stuffing it in a bottle
Bike
  • 1h 14m 15s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.08 mile/hr
Comments:

So, there were definitely more hills than I expected. I felt like I was really strong on the rolling sections and then the hills came. They were tough, but I was passing people (only got passed once) so I guess that was a pretty good indication of my progress. I had forgotten to engage my back breaks, so that explains the dangerous skids going down hill. I pushed hard, but it felt good overall.
What would you do differently?:

Keep working on the hills -- and especially work on going down hill
Transition 2
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

Hey, it was better than my last transition. I would have run faster off the bike, but there was a large group of people.
What would you do differently?:

not much, just keep working on making it seemless.
Run
  • 41m 22s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 06m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

I think I might have had a better time with pacing if there were more mile markers, but other than that the run wasn't bad. It hurt, but the run always hurts a little. I felt like I maintained a pretty steady pace throughout.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster
Post race
Warm down:

Some water and then a bagel. Didn't spend much time hanging around

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need to get faster at swimming and better at climbing hills

Event comments:

This is a good race. It's tough, but there is a really good vibe around it, the people are friendly and the event went pretty well (there was some confusion, it seemed, with some of the run course-- people not knowing where to go). Overall, this is a race I would definitely do again!
