Back on 9/22, Mrs. Brown Doug mentioned Red Top Rumble: "If not for the marathon training, I'd definitely sign up for the Red Top Rumble in November.  It's a 10/11 mile trail race.  Doug ran it last year and it looked like a lot of fun."

She peaked my interest so I looked it up, and it is being run on February 8th.  Registration opens today and is limited to 250 participants.  I need a target to keep me on track before the 2009 tri season so I'm in.  Registration Link:  http://www.active.com/page/Event_Details.htm?event_id=1642269

Yeah, apparently I had the date wrong.  This was an awesome race.  Brown dog and I are both in (or just one of us if the grandmas are busy).

I loved this race.

It was so different than the typical road race and I had a blast.  Pacing is difficult when you are running through the woods and this adds to the fun.  You just run.  And the post race grub and schwag  was the best.  Sign up early because it sells out really fast.

Trail runs are the funnest type of run, in my opinion. I just completed a sprint tri and the run was on trails and it was a blast!

I'll sign up for this one!

I have a lot of conditioning to do this winter to get up to that mileage, though!

Looking forward to it...

Hey ppl, since we have a little time before this race, i'm going to put a few things out for those of you that haven't run trails before/much.

if you don't run trail runs, it would probably benefit you to run a few before you run this race. i am primarily a road runner (meep, meep!). i hardly ever run trails. I had an XTerra trail run a little over a week ago and it really kicked my butt. i consider myself to be a fairly strong runner...

you use different muscles during trail runs. i can normally run at a decent clip, but was about 2 mins/mile slower than what i projected. on top of that, my legs were nuked after that run (really, really sore) for a few days...

Also, it might benefit you to use/buy trail running shoes. i ran my last race in running shoes and was slipping and sliding all over the place! not enough traction or stability. one slip caused me to fall on a bunch of rocks and bruise my knee...

it's hard to pace yourself on these type of runs. you probably should run a few and get a feel for how fast/slow you're going to go over certain types of terrain. you could then look at the elevation graph and estimate what your pace is going to be. don't go in saying/thinking you're going to run 7 min miles without knowing the terrain. 5ks/10ks etc are easier to set those types of goals, b/c they're primarily flat (some hills, but not too much)...

just wanted to throw that out there...

good luck and see you ppl there!

I am definitely not a trail running expert, but I did run the Red Top Rumble last year.  Here are some of my random thoughts:

1.  The course:  It started out on a fire road for a few miles.  Don't be afraid to push it through here and get ahead of some folks.  Next you run a trail that is a couple feet wide and a little hilly.  After this they make a transition from one trail to another.  The transition is straight through the woods.  They have it flagged and you really just follow the guy in front of you so you won't get lost.  This section had a "climb" where I remember grabbing trees to help myself up.   After that it is hilly trails that are a few feet wide and finishes with about a half mile of single track and then about 50 yds of open ground.  try to suck it up and pass people before the single track.  It's too bumpy and narrow to look ahead for a spot to pass and watch where you are running.  Hold the people off through this section, but save something for that last 50 yds.

2.  Shoes:  I ran in  my normal road shoes and I was fine.

3. Pace:  This is the wildest part.  You can't run at a certain pace and then kick it at the end.  When you get a chance you have to pick up the pace to pass and some of the hills are tough.  I charged a small hill only to realize it was a big hill.    This is a race that will challenge you to think through how you feel and what you have left.

4. Gettin' ready:  I did some longer runs (8-10 miles) at the Lieta Thompson trail in Roswell.  The 11.5 miles of the race seemed easy compared to that place.

If anyone needs more info let me know.

I'm stoked about this race, sounds like the course is gonna be challenging.  Knowing me I'll just go out blazing for the first 2 or 3 miles and spend the rest trying to keep it together.  I would recommend going up to Kennesaw Battlefield park for some good trail running to get prepared, that place kicked my heiny.

First, I spelled the ladies name wrong!  Here is the address:

LEITA THOMPSON MEMORIAL PARK
1200 Woodstock Road
Roswell,GA 30075

It is a trail the city has been working on that has three distance options.  The longest is only 2.5 miles.  This is the only trail I've ever run outside the race, so it is the only one I can compare it to.  Maybe there is someone out there who has more experience that can give a better comparison of this trail and some others.  It has some switch backs where you need quick feet and it is very hilly.  If you can find a trail that isn't by a river (flat) it should match up well with the course for the race.

I'd just like to post a thank you to GUTS and the RTR RD for being really cool. I had an issue arise that prevented me from attending the rumble and they graciously refunded my entry fee.

Thanks!

Yikes.

Word is out on this race.  I hope everybody was able to get in.  If not You might be able to come out and run it without a number.  Last year they were OK witht that, but I would check before I did it.
