Yosel88 - 2009-02-24 5:02 PM I'm gonna be picking up my race packet sometime saturday, i wonder if the key will be closed since on saturdays there are tons of boats and jetskis on virginia key. BTW virginia key is not a lake, its actual ocean water. I've swam here before since its one of my favorites spots to hang out, its actually really nice and calm. I'll make sure to let you know if im swimming on saturday.

BTW. here's a pic of virginia key. http://www.skypic.com/miami/10-9125.jpg

I don't know if you will be allowed to swim in that Area the day before the Race....but...It's usually very calm waters and they don't allow boats and jets sky in that area cuz is where the Miami Rowing Club train....Let see and hope they allow us to swim that day...It would be fantastic....

I dont think you can swim in there....but i know that team hammerheads swim on the otherside (meaning in the ocean rather then in the lagoon) i don't see why they would swim in the ocean with the boats and other crapola if the lagoon was open.

depending on your budget you can find nice hotels around key biscayne, but there are also tons of crapholes around so make sure you know where you're getting into. BTW staying IN key biscayne is $$$$ so check just outside that area.

And the swimming idea seems like fun we should definitely set it up.

aight so after hours and hours of searching i think i found an OK place near the site for under 150.
with my AAA discount it would be 135, wanted to know from people around that area if this is an OK area of collins ave etc....
It is the Howard Johnson plaza Dezerland beach and spa on 8701 Collins Ave, Miami Beach, FL 33154
anyone been by there or know that area?
i am definately not expecting the ritz, but considering im using it for 6 hours of sleep it would probably be fine..
thoughts?helP~!

thats a fairly good area, i grew up in 71st and collins just a few blocks away.  i believe that area is called surfside, pretty calm neighborhood with tons of cops handing tickets out for no reason. Surfside is a good 1 hour away from key biscayne.

Thanks Yosel. Appreciate the insight.
I think the wife and I are gonna just stay in Fort Lauderdale. There is a luxury resort with a SICK deal on one or two night stay, and since my wife is coming along etc.. i figured id hook her up with a nice hotel etc.... its 30 miles (all 95south) from the racesite and i dont expect alot of traffic at 5 am on 95 sunday morning so were good.
I will however, if we can find water to swim, be down for the saturday swim still, planning on going to expo early walking around grabbing my packet etc.dropping off my bike then trying to get a swim in before we head back to chill in ft. lauderdale.
So everyone update if someone manages to find some water we can do a group swim in.

Don't forget there's a lot of ocean out there to swim in.  I don't have any access to a pool so I only do ocean swims.  Of course you will need to get a little lucky and hope it isn't too windy or rough that Saturday.

Yea Yossel, take it easy bro the week before, go out there and run your race.
When i did my first sprint, i was having nagging knee trouble as well (too much volume to quick) but i found when i self-tapered the week before, I had no trouble on the run portion and i wasn't pushing it. So give yourself a taper for next week with more emphasis on swimmin and bikin, youll be good!!!!!

THE RACE IS OFFICIALLY SOLD OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IM SOOOO EXCITED, my first oly as well, hoping for right around 2:30, i want to get on one of those helicopter rides that shows you the race course...wonder how much it will cost? thatd be awesome tho.

I'm psyched!  My wife just scored a room for 2 nights before the race.  We only live in WPB but it will be nice to take a mini-vacation before the race and avoid the drive on race day.  Bonus: the hotel has a 20 yard pool so If I can't find a good place to get in an OW swim on Sat. I can always swim at the hotel.

I've got big butterflies already since this is my first Oli.  I think I've been through the course 20 times in my head so far.  Helpful hint: you can view the course in Google Earth and it's a great way to see where the turns and the bridges are.  For those that don't know SoFla we tend to get E-SE winds this time of year so keep that in mind when you look at the bike course.

Hey...

You will be Ok...DON'T WORRY BE HAPPY...!!! The idea is to Enjoy and have fun during the Race....and..Finish...LOL

About the winds...here in South Florida...usually come from NE...but...sometimes...change...We have had gusty winds coming from NW this week...and sometime come from SE but not usual....

You will need to check the weather channel the day before the Race and the Race day...cuz...the winds change all the time...

I check the weather channel everytime before my bike rides cuz...here...where I live is too windy...

Yeah i've been swimming this week and nothing else, its feeling better. I dont think it should be a factor on race day, but either way im gonna play it safe and just do a quick easy run this sunday to get the feel for it.

I hope the water its not cold, cause i dont have a wetsuit. I did a swim earlier this week in the cold just in case its chilly on race day. Im verrrrrrrrry excited about this race, i cant wait!

right...you never know about the wind out there, it can come from any direction. one thing is for certain, there will be wind...but keep in mind that what ever direction it's blowing you will have the wind at your back for half the ride so use it when you can

Coming from LI, NY. Shipped my bike down earlier this week. We're staying in Boca so it is going to be some drive down on Saturday and then Sunday morning.

Swimming and running have been going well, but with the weather we've been having, the biking will be ugly.

This is my first race where I fly to. I'm sure I will forget something!
