Subject: Which sport drink and why?
With my recent visit to the doctor and some extensive research on my own I have found out that the body needs to be rehydrated with not only water but also electrolytes. (DUH!) However, sports drinks which are more than 6-10% simple carbs can actually cause even more hydration in certain individuals (something about water from the body rushing into the small intestine to deal with the new found sugars) Thus, it may very well be that the more gatorade I drank the worse that I made my dehydration. (It is important to note that almost all of the studies I have read in the last 48 hours state that gatorade and powerade are actually good for the majority of individuals since they fall into the 6-10% range) Thus my question to you is what sports drink do you use and how do you like it? Do you use something like gatorade but water it down to lessen the percentage of sugars? Are there ones that work for you but unfortuntely the taste or cost keep you from buying and using? I need some suggestions since I have always been a gatorade guy and it has always worked for me until I started this triathlon training and being active for more than 2 hours at a time. Thanks.

I use Gatorade and Accelerade. I buy the powder form of Gatorade and mix it to my own concentrations.  It ends up being a little more diluted that what they recommend, but it works for me.  I love the accelerade, but it runs on the expensive side when compared to gatorade.  I've used it enough to know my stomach can tolerate it, so now I only use it forlong training runs and rides.

I tried a few different sports drinks and ended up liking Accelerade, which is what I've used for the past 3 years. The formula has improved since I first started using it too. You can check out the product at http://www.accelerade.com/index2.php

Can't say I looked at the science much, but from a practical sense, my body responded very favorably i.e. I felt much more energized!

My sister uses Cytomax, but I've never tried it.

I have discovered that what I drink is not as important as how often I drink. I'm very disciplined about hydrating every 15 minutes during workouts. I found this out while doing a Ride from Seattle to Vancouver, BC (111 miles the first day, 78 the second). I got distracted on the second day and lost the bubble on nutrition & hydration and bonked hard. The kind of bonk where it's almost an out of body experience.

After that "experience" I started paying attention to hydration and it improved life considerably.

Good luck on your quest!

stay away from gatorade on endurace events because gatorade has simple sugars and requires more water to get it absorbed into the cells and you'll have to drink more of it to get the electrolytes you need.  trouble this simple sugar scenario is that during endurace events your body won't be able to process the amount of liquid required to give you the energy and more of the electrolytes you need from simple sugars and thus it'll stay in your stomach and cause bloating.  plus 6%-8% solution, the max concentration the body can absorb of simple sugars, only gives you 100 calories/hour.

complex carbs are better because their "energy" concentration is 3 times that of simple sugars and required less fluid for absorption.  comples carbs max concentration for absorption is 18%-24% and will give you 300 calories/hour.

so, when the benchmark is to consume 250-280 calories per hour in endurance events (over 90 min in length) which carbs would you use?

I use Cytomax (Tangy Orange), and I like it a lot. It has more complex carbs, so I can make do with a little less. I use it on my morning runs instead of eating something, which seems to suit me pretty well.

I am Cytomax fan!

Last November on my first marathon I brought 2 bottles of cytomax on my fuel bet for the last part of the race since I trained that way. After the mile 20 I was feeling tired so I figured it was time for some cytomax... maybe it was psychological but all of the sudden I felt great, revitalize, fresh and was able to finish the race strong (in fact the last 2 miles were my fastest splits!) So ever after that experience I always keep some cytomax for hard workouts

Everyone is different, you have to get the right combination for your body (a lot of trial and error here). Gatorade is not the best option there since most of its carbohidrates come from sugar. Some people swear by Cytomax (complex carbs here) but is not easy to come by like Gatorade. It is a powder and you have to learn the proper dilution. I personally like the gels. Gu is my favorite. Why the gels? because it comes in packets. You will not find your special drink the day of the race. I personally do not like to change things, the day of the race I just carry my gels, dilute them with water at the station, voila.... But you need the right combination with water or the gel will sit in your stomach. If you use the gels be consistent, do not mix gels and gatorare at the water station. Also, each of the 3 activities have different requirements. What works for running is not the same when you are on your bike. Confusing you bet!

For sprint distance I've used the gatorade powder (I like lemon/lime and the other flavors are sickening) mixed with a little more water than recommended. Works well for me. I also know people who just mix half Coke and half water and do great with that. I've tried eating gels a few times and discovered a gag reflex I didn't know I had. Raisins work pretty well. I think it's personal, trial and error.

Gatorade, why?  Because is cheap and I can find it anywhere.  I just ordered Sustained Energy from Hammer Nutrition (I'm a big fan of the Endurolytes).

For sprint distance and hour long workouts, good ole water. Cytomax for workouts over an hour. Cytomax and CarboPro for anything over three hours.

CarboPro:

I'm loyal to Cytomax. I stay away from Carb sources such as fructose so that's one reason. But the biggest reason is that it doesn't make me yak! And once I found a glycogen replacement drink that doesn't do that, I'm on board for life. I use the powder (I'm not sure if there's an alternative to that) at full strength. On rides of 30 to 75 miles I go with one bottle of Cytomax and one bottle water and bring a gel for emergencies. Longer than that I go with both bottles Cytomax and gel.

BTW it's the Tropical Punch or Fruit or whatever it is flavor. I used Extran, and as far as it's effect on my performance goes, it was great, but I got that queasy feeling a little too often for my money.

A combination of watered down Gatorade and gels with water. Sometime's on a long bike ride (over 2 hours) I'll eat some solids -like part of a powerbar with gulps of water. I almost always have one bottle of just water and a seperate carb source, be it gatorade, gel, or bar.

I like the GU20 since it is not sweet.  Sugar is a diuretic for me as it is with many people.  All those sports drinks and gels are nothing more than gut bombs when in a race.  I can't tolerate the taste after a while.  During a run, I'll use watered down GU20 to stay hydrated and EnduroxR4 afterwards as a recovery drink.

I stick with gatorade because it is easy to find and the powder is pretty cheap if you buy in the big canisters. W/o the gatorade I get pretty bad headaches or else I would stick to just water.

Acceleradte tastes horrible (to me). Couldn't choke it down. PowerBar Endurance tastes fine--it is less sweet than Gatorade or Powerade.

Endurox tastes fine to me; I used the fruit punch flavor and have just ordered the tangy orange flavor for a change.

It's true! For years the official replenishment drink for the Marine Corps Marathon was Ultima...And it tastes like you're holding pennies in your mouth...like you did when you were a little kid. I bought the stuff and tried to learn to like it, but it was nasty! They had all kinds of studies to prove that it was better at replenishing electrolytes than Gatorade, but the reality is, that if it tastes like crap, you're not gonna drink as much as you should. There was much rejoicing when they switched to Powerade last year.

So tell me, what does accelerade taste like? Is it metallic, bitter, and what kind of aftertaste?

Try Hammer H.E.E.D, it is not sweet at all and is (almost) all complex carbs. Good luck finding it in a store, I think you need to buy it online.

For shorter events, under the 1/2iron distance, I use Hammer H.E.E.D. For longer events I use Hammer Perpetuem past the three hour mark. H.E.E.D. tastes terrific (really, that has to be an important criteria), uses complex carbohydrates, and has a broad range of electrolytes. Perpetuem utilizes a 9:1 carb/protein ratio, with the carbs being maltodextrins and the protein being soy. I also use Recoverite after races or tough workouts, and my pre-race breakfast always includes Sustained Energy. If you've never visited www.hammernutrition.com, do so - it's an extremely informative site. An if you have any questions, give them a call and you'll receive top-notch service and advice.

Prior to H.E.E.D. and Recoverite hitting the market last year, and Perpetuem the year before, I used Accelerade and e-Fuel (Crank Sports) during races and rides, and Endurox after events for recovery. Every once in a blue moon I'll use one of those products for variety (I still have them kicking around), but my go-to drinks are the ones from Hammer listed above.
