My other main sport besides triathlon is ice hockey. It seems as though in the last few years since I've started doing tri's I've lost a step or three. Now the most likely explanation is that I'm just getting old (just turned 40), but is there any possibility that a steady regimine of base training could be hurting speed in other sports? Would more intervals help?

Unless you are doing sport specific work, you will always "lose a step" even when you are training well in another.

If you want to get the edge back in hockey, skate and train accordingly.

And you could be more tired from your tri training when you do skate/play.

Selling your soul to tri and endurance sport has been shown to slash 25-30% off your shooting percentage in hoops.  Its science.
