So how do you wash your running clothes?  Of course, if the clothes are soaked with sweat after a long run or if they get muddy, I wash them.

But when I run during lunch at work they only get lightly "damp".  Anyone else wear a shirt 2-3 times before washing it and is that ok?

I don't want to break any hidden rules or offfend anyone.

I do the smell test.  If it just gets slightly damp during a workout, give it a sniff before you put it on again.  If it's really smelly, wash it.  If it's just a little smelly, wear it

I will wear a shirt until it stinks (doesn't take too long!)
I only have a couple pairs of tights so I will wear those a few times too.

I hope you change out of your running clothes after your run at lunch, though

I don't know what the rules are, but I do exactly that. Wear them 2-3 times unless they are soaked in sweat or muddy. Socks excluded, they get washed after every run.

It depends on how stinky they are. If there is residual bacteria, a short workout will really make the clothes stink fast. I don't wear clothes that stink- it grosses me out.  But not as much as smelling other peoples funk!  ;~) I wash all my workout gear with vinegar added to the wash, detergent, and then hang them dry (no heat to make the critters multiply).  I can then get a couple of short workouts in without hooooba stank. High summer, thats another story.

eww

i definitely wear all workout gear only once before it goes in the laundry.  i would get crazy breakouts on my back if i worked up a sweat in already sweaty clothes.

I wear running pants more than once between washings. But I also wear undies with pants - always. Anything else, I can't imagine wearing more than once without washing...

Even in freezing weather I've just about soaked through my clothes by the end of the block. There's no way I can do more than one use before washing.

You guys must not sweat that much, but anything that touches my body is soaked after my runs and thus smelly and gets put in the washer right away otherwise it stinks up the laundry hamper.

When we bring the laundry upstairs probably 70% of mine is workout clothes.

I can't imagine putting any of what I wear and workout in on for another workout...gross.

Now that is is cold, when I get home from working out I need to change right away or the sweat soaked clothes get chilly and I get cold quickly.

it sounds like all of you are the lucky types that don't have to share communal washer/dryers in a large apartment complex.  Due to the hastle and cost, I usually end up washing up my workout clothes after they smell so bad I nearly gag (usually after 4 or 5 wears) or I have a load of regular clothes to wash, whichever comes first.  I've been trying to get in the habit of atleast rinsing off my clothes in the shower after a work out, but that is not as helpful as I thought it would be.

They must not work out that hard

It's one wear for me and then wash, my clothes get smelly pretty quickly. I had a PT appointment this week and forgot to swap the clothes in my bag from a previous workout, I really felt sorry for the therapist, I probably smelled pretty bad.

Wear them untill they stink, then do one load of workout clothes that get washed in cold water and "smelly" detergent.

1 wear, 1 wash.... cold water laundry with detergent from Fleet Feet, hang dry.  Between my wife and I, we have 3 drying racks and a hanging rack... they consume the apartment.... (but we smell good).b

I'm one of the communal laundry users, so I've had to minimize my laundry usage - and I tend to work out a fair amount.

I LOVE my drying rack. I think in most cases, folks can get by with multiple wears on shirts and shorts as long as you let them immediately dry out between uses. If you stick them into a hamper damp, they will immediately get moldy and then smell - often even after laundering them.

I don't even use a drier anymore - the drying rack suffices for all, and keeps the clothes in a multiuse rotation. Probably 3-5 uses on shorts, 2-3 on shirts, and 1-2 on socks. All tech stuff.

This literally cuts my usual laundry load in HALF. I'm always surprised when my fiance (who is not really an athlete) comes over and has over double the laundry I have, even after I've worked out twice a day, 6-7 days per week.

I wash my clothes on a gentle cycle with no softener after every run or spin class workout etc.......  I do not have much to choose from so I try to keep it all nice and clean

I agree -- also, the salt residue on my shirt would chaffe.  And I want to smell clean air when I'm running, not stinky clothes.  But maybe you sweat less than I do.  Whatever works for you so long as you aren't offending others.

I sweat. A lot. I'll fill the sink with water and a bit of woolite, and let them soak, wring/rinse and air dry.

I wear once and wash. I don't think I could do more than that. I have to use a communal washer as well, but I've been running for years and have also worked at a couple of running stores where I got stuff for really cheap so I have quite a stock built up. I have probably five pairs of tights, the same amount of shorts, who knows how many shirts now that races give away technical shirts, etc. That helps a lot.

I run from home and toss my stuff into the laundry when I get home so it's ready for next time. I began this practice after my wife commented on the smell coming from items hanging in the bathroom. I'm a heavy sweater, so it even grosses me out when I put something on that hasn't been washed.

I usually wash'em after each workout. However, if I'm running out of workout clothes, you'll find me hamper diving. Also with all the layering I do in winter runs, the chance of reusing something increases as the item of clothes is worn further from the body.
