Subject: Shoulder Pain: Help!

I am at my wit's end.  For years I have not been able to cycle more than two hours without developing a serious pain in my left upper back/shoulder.  It doesn't matter whether it's a road bike or a TT bike.  I've had fittings by John Cobb.  So far it's made no difference.  We're still working on it but I'm running out of time.  I have an HIM in six weeks and I have not been able to cycle more than 40 miles without extreme pain.  My right side is fine.

I know you can't solve this, but can anyone commiserate?  Have any similar experiences?

What have you tried in terms of treatment? Obviously your bike fit is NOT the issue. Have you tried ART??? Magical treatment......might be worth a shot at this point. I had a partially torn rotator cuff so know how much shoulder pain SUCKS!

 Good Luck!

I would seriously look into a good sports massage therepist and a chiropractor. I have 4 dislocated discs and two twisted vertebrea in my neck as well as a dislocted spinal cord in the neck area. With all of that the pain translates to a sever muscle knot in my trapezius whenever I do extensive computer work or ride my bike for very long. I've already had massive surgery to repair two crushed vertebreas in my back, so even more surgery on my neck is out of the question right now. I started working with a good sports message therepist and I've noticed a difference after only 3 treatments.

Thanks.  That's mainly the consensus I've received so far.  We have a good sports med. doctor locally and I will see if I can get in to see her soon and get some more information.

I used to have the same problem and my solution was not bike fit or massage (although it is great for other things), but rather a weak core. Start doing core training every morning and in a couple of week you are probably fine for substantially longer than the 40 miles.

Also, you do stretch after each ride right?

I have the same problem, and have just had my bike refitted (umpteenth time)  I am hoping that this time is the charm. I have yet to ride it so am not sure if it will have helped.

Why should this time different??? Well, this bike fitter is also a chiropractor and looked at my history, where my shoulder was hurting and stuff like that.  He put me on my bike and then pushed at various muscles to show me why it was sore, which muscles were affected and what would happen if we moved or adjusted something on my bike.

I have found previously that going to a chiropractor has helped with the pain, however it always returns unless I go very regularly.  It was actually my regular chiropractor that recommended him.  I have a long ride (135km) on Sunday so will see if it has helped.

Yes, I thought working on a weak core would also benefit, so I have been doing that for some months now.  It sure hasn't done any harm, but alas it has yet to affect this specific problem.

I also get this trap knot in my left shoulder. I've tried everything from accupuncture to injections. At one point a few years ago I just quit cycling. I'm back cycling, but still get there burning after 45 minutes on the bike. I'm considering ART. Last year I saw another doctor and an MRI. It showed I had arthrithis in my neck. He suggested some cervical traction and isometric exercises.
Wondering how everyone else is doing? Is it just one shoulder?
