Well my Olympic Tri is in three days time and the nerves are just starting to build. It is nervous anticipation however; I am actually really looking forward to the event. It wasn't that long ago that I was doubting my ability to even finish the event, now I am setting goals about finish times - and fully expecting to achieve them.

I was looking back at my logs last night and I have surprised myself with how far I have come. Not that long ago I was happy with a 45 minute 1,500 metre swim for example. Now I am swimming 1,500 metres in 35 minutes and I rank myself as 'average' at best. At the same period I wasn't even really running - lots of 'brisk walks', but no real running. Now I have a 10km run under my belt and I feel great.

My weight has really plateaued but I am confident that the running will bring that down - quickly.
I have eased up on my diet this last couple of weeks as I want to be 'energised' for my race this weekend. After the race I will be getting serious again and sticking to a calorie controlled diet with plenty of exercise - especially running.

My next entry will most likely be in the form of a race report and I hope that I am reporting on a successful and potential fulfilling event. I can't wait...

I'm back from my weekend away and my first ever Olympic Distance Tri. I had a goal of completing it in 3:30:00 and I am happy to report that I managed to complete the course in 3:25:51. I am very happy with this result. I know that this is not a particularly fast time but being 100 pounds overweight is quite a handicap.

I learnt a lot from the experience and I now know where I need to improve and, more importantly, what I can achieve. This experience has been fantastic.

The swim went almost exactly to plan, the bike was a little slower than I had hoped for but I rode within myself and the run was satisfying. I am really looking forward to next year and taking at least 30 minutes off my time.

Check out my Race Report here http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=186321&posts=1&start=1 and check out the comments about going down 'The Hill'. I smoked it!

With regards to reporting on my weight-loss progress I am taking a few weeks off. I realise that this may sound odd for a weight-loss journey thread however, I feel as though I have been almost obsessing over my figures - times, weight, calorie consumption, etc...

I feel as though I need a few weeks to just enjoy exercising and improving my run without the pressure to measure and monitor every aspect. This may sound like a bit of a 'cop out' but I guess only time will tell.

I will continue to post here and let you all know how I am going with my exercise but I wont be posting charts, figures or measurements until at least the beginning of December.

Best Wishes to all.

Congrats on your race Gus.  And no harm in taking a few weeks off from the "scale obsession" feeling.  I haven't weighed myself in a month or two, and I am much happier.

I think that once the actual lifestyle change starts to take hold better, being obsessed with the weight isn't as helpful.  At first it's great because you can see results to show you're doing the right thing.  But later when you want to exercise and eating poorly feels even more wrong, you're set really.

really happy for your success. I think taking the focus off the numbers and on to just enjoying what you're doing is a great idea. Look forward to seeing your progress.

A little update....

My body has finally yielded to the pressure of training and racing and is protesting vehemently! I have developed a cold and a nasty cough - which has kept me from doing anything this last week.

My eating has been controlled but without any exercise I fear that there will be damage done on the scales - another reason that I have chosen to ignore them for a few weeks.

My brother is talking about us doing a HIM in February but I think it is too soon for me. I am confident about the swim and bike legs but the run is, quite frankly, scaring the bejeezes outta me. I really need to focus on my run training to address this. I was planning on starting a half-marathon training plan this week but I guess it will have to wait for another week.

Anyway, hopefully I am feeling better in a few days and I can recommence some training....

I would agree that Feb could be a little soon for a HIM.  I'm thinking about one for next Oct/Nov for myself, and think that may be rushing it a little anyhow.  We'll see though.  My mum might be moving to the town where they have Beach 2 Battleship, so I could add that as a yearly race.

Feel better soon Gus.

Another update....

It's been a couple of weeks since I have done any sort of exercise as I am (still) recovering from the flu.

I developed a nasty cough that prevented me from any form of physical exersion. This has frustrated me no end and I am looking forward to getting back into things. I am grateful that I didn't get ill before my Olympic but I am so over it all now. I just want to run.

I am hoping that I can get back on the track on Sunday, but I am a little worried about how much conditrion I have lost in the last two plus weeks.

I hope you all are well.

Just checking in your progress.  You have done great so far and congrats on meeting your time goals at your Olympic Tri.

I also noticed that your weight loss has leveled off for a month or so.  Typically for me when I got stuck I would have to mix things up a bit to get it moving again.  Because I do a low carb diet I might eat more carbs over one weekend than normal like have a sweet potato with dinner.  Perhaps you could take the opposite approach and drop your carb intake and up your fat intake for a few days just to throw your body a curve ball.

There is a 'Fad' type diet out there that might also fit the bill for a week or two to mix things up.  I did this one as well and it got the scale moving again.  It's called JUDDDD and you can read about it here.  I stayed with low-carb while I did it and could not manage more than a couple of weeks because my energy levels were just to low.   But it got me off the plateau I was on at the time.

Good luck.
