So... I did pretty well with meeting my March goals. For the most part I stuck well to my training schedule of running 3-4 times a week, swimming 2 times a week, and cycling 3 times a week. I didn't hold to that schedule for the last week of the month because I developed a fairly nasty shin splint, so I cut out running altogether and cut back on cycling to about half my routine, and sad to day, I didn't swim at all that week, but it was because of Spring Break and my classes were out.

I did ONE strength training workout. Doh. Need to work on that more. But at least I figured out what to do and when. I did manage to do my sit ups and other ab stuff most of the month, but I have to admit I slacked off a bit near the end. I think I came down with the burn-out-blues. But I'm now jonesin' for a workout, so I feel like it was a good break without becoming a problem.

Goals for April:
- continue training schedule: bike 3x week, swim 2x week, run 4x week (but only ONE day of speed work to prevent over-training which results in shin splints)
- increase frequency of strength training workouts (include legs now)
- work on sleep schedule, and aim for a good nights sleep as often as possible
- improve carb/protein/fat ratios (which means including more protein, and fewer simple carbs)
- hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

Finally, May 1 is my A race for the year, so it's entirely too close for comfort at this point. I need to just keep doing the right thing and get through without injury or burnout.

What about you all? What're your goals for April?

I have a metric century, and a 1/2 marathon scheduled, both as tune up "fun" races in preparation of my 1/2 Iron in June.  I'll be focusing on my Thurday long runs, and Saturday long rides throughout the month. I also have my 2nd and 3rd TI swim clinics this month.  My goal is to stay focused on all of these anchor workouts, fill in my weeks around them, and focus on my recovery. -Matt

This month I`m going to work on more consistent (4x a week) running with a focus on good form and staying injury free, and increasing my time on the bike alot (goal of 5-6 hours per week by the end of April as opposed to 3 hours now). It`s tough to get to the pool from my house, but with the good weather, I should be able to do some open water swims in the ocean, so I hope to do 3-4 this month. Swimming is by far my best event so I`m not too worried about the lost pool time.

Lastly I hope to surf as much as possible and increase my overall conditioning for the coming typhoon season!

Good luck everyone!

April is all about the bike.

Goal is 500 cycling miles this month, with a metric century in mid-April and a full century May 1.

I'm very happy with what I have accomplished in March. I managed to miss very few workouts despite having a very busy schedule. My goals for March were as follows:

Swim - swim 1500m continuously and average under 2:00/100m (completed)
Bike - spend more time on the bike than Feb and get outside (I went from 10h on the bike to almost 14h and had 100km outside)
Run - continue building long run towards Apr goal of 1:30 long run (finished the month with a long run of 1:15)

For April what I would like to be able to accomplish is:

Swim - 1000m continuous with pace of 1:50/100 and continue with masters
Bike - get outside as much as possible and do lots of LSD to build better base and build to 3h long ride
Run - achieve 1:30 long run and continue to focus ono fast turnover and good form

Good luck to all with this months goals!

Swim: Consistancy in workouts. Aiming for 3 workouts week, 1500yards+ 1 per week 2500yards+

Bike: Hit 30 hours on the bike. 5 long rides ths month. 3 hills, 2 flats.

Run: Get outside more. Treadmill is a necessity, but one run of 6+ miles outside each week

Weights: Consistancy in workouts. Get them in, where ever I can

Diet: >2500 cals of clean food. 2 sushi nights this month after 4+ hour bike rides. Those are the only cheat days.

my A races aren't until june and august, so i've been training thinking about the long term. in the short term, i feel like i've been very good about sticking to my schedule. we've been spending a ton of time outside too, which is wonderful. i have a race this weekend - 8 mile running opener. in a couple weeks we're (hopefully) doing a 40 or 60 mile organized ride (depending on if we can get grandma to come watch the kids, since we'll have to leave really early). first 10k is in a few weeks too. we're hoping to do some more camping too. our dog is still recovering from a torn acl, so no backpacking trips yet, but maybe a night of car camping and some light hiking. main goals for the next couple months:

+ drop another 10 lbs
+ do yoga every other day (for strength and flexibility)
+ spend more time in the woods
+ get my garden planted!

Sigh... Yes, I need to work on this area of my training as well. I was just thinking about this while brushing my teeth this morning (I think it had somethign to do with the new number I saw on the scale this morning -- post race, so it doesn't *really* count).

I'm not a "dieter". What I find works for me is increasing "clean" food, like you say, which naturally cuts down on the amount of "cheat" food. So my food goals are:

- 1-2 fruits and vegetables with each meal.
- increase my lean proteins
- quality carbs
- aim for 25+g of fiber per day
- water, water, water
- continue rationing "treats" (that's been working for me quite well, actually)
-- ice cream on days with a 3+ mile run
-- two small chocolates in the afternoon
-- 6 small cookies in the evening (when I don't have ice cream)

March:

Not too bad. I kindof messed up my schedule... I worked harder than I should have on a "Rest" week but not hard enough to call it a "Work" week, and then I "rested" during the first "Work" week...

One thing I've learned is that it appears that a 2-on / 1 off pattern seems to fit my rhythm and life schedule a little better than 3-on / 1-off schedule. I'll see how the rest of this season plays out, and maybe adjust next year's training to reflect that.

So for April:

2 weeks of "Build 2" where I will ride my bike into the ground while maintaining my swim and run (hopefully swim 3x and run 2-3x per week) and working on some strength trainng, especially on my legs.

Then a rest week, followed by two weeks of "Peak" and a taper week before my first "A" race on May 15.

I've been on the trainer some this winter, but I'm waaaaay behind on road miles, and it shows. I've got to really focus on catching up on the bike. I'm not so worried about the others. I've knocked 2min+ off my 5K time (still excruciatingly slow, but faster than I was), and I'm improving steadily in the swim. I'm going to keep working on them, but HEAVILY focus on the bike this month.

Sh**! You didn't tell me that! I have to ride 300 miles?!

Ok, so the Bear and I have a wager going. Therefore, apparently my goal is to ride 300 miles. *looks around for her bike*

No, you GET to ride 300 miles.

What are we wagering anyway?

Good question. Bear and I are now accepting suggestions about what the winner gets.

Had a good training month in March.  Got in most of my planned workouts including my longest run ever (90min and 8.8mi).  As the run followed a 45min ocean swim, this was also my longest workout since my rowing days in college.  My main goal for March was to add in core/abs work at least 3x a week.  Unfortunately, I skipped my week on vacation but otherwise have been holding to this and plan to continue into April.

For April, my focus is a 10k run on the 17th and getting some quality time on my new (first) road bike outdoors.  I have increasing confidence on my run & swim and need to get the bike to the same level.  Also will start doing some bike/run bricks this month--first tri is in May!
