Subject: Saddle sores = worn out saddle?

Did St. Anthony's this weekend and came away with something I almost never get: a saddle sore in the nether region.  (I'd post a pic ... but you don't want to see it! )

I did not apply chaomis butter or body glide prior to the race .. but I commonly do not do that before most races.  Plus, the ride was only 25 miles long - and there was no swim.

Tri shorts used were some that have been tried and true through other rides with no problems.  Saddle was in the same position as were the cleats on the shoes.

This leads me to think that perhaps maybe the saddle is wearing out?  The leather shows no scuffs or means to rough-up the skin ... although it does show wear as I have put somewhere in the negihborhood of 4500-5500 miles on it since 2007, inlcuding all the way through IMCdA and IMFL training (the long rides of both did not produced saddle sores like I got  from St. A's)

Question: how long do saddles last?  How often do you change out your saddles?

My guess is the shorts might be wearing out.

I've gotten 5k+ miles out of a saddle and I usually end up changing bike before I change a saddle.

The things I've seen on saddle sores have said they are caused by an infected sweat gland. If you don't feel any unusual pressure points from your saddle it is probably ok. The advice I have seen on saddle sores has been to make sure shorts are clean and use anti-bacterial soap. If you are doing those things already i guess it could have something to do with the saddle. Good Luck, saddle sores are no fun.

Like others have said, more likely your tried and true shorts are ready for retirement.  Sorry about that. Frown

Did you change out of your shorts pretty quickly after the race?  A quick clean up will help avoid saddle sores as well.

As far as saddles, the longest I've ridden one saddle was 10 years.  Don't know the mileage logged on it.  The only reason I got a new saddle was that it came with the new bike.

Thanks ... I'll give that a try as I would much rather buy new shorts than break in a new saddle.

ACtually, upon further review, it appears that my saddle somehow became crooked.

I was doing a long ride this weekend with friends and one riding behind me notices that the saddle was listing to the left (see pics below).

I contacted the Adamo manufacturer ISM and got some creat customer service feedback.  It appears that some Cervelos have difficulty keeping the seat post bolt that clamps the saddle rails in place from going askew ... has anyone else heard of this?

Almost looks like the saddle "extensions" to the front are whonky too, unless that's just the camera angle.

Good eye ... those are zip ties All3Sports used to narrow the front of the saddle when doing the initial fit.  Made an already comfortable saddle even more comfortable.
