For anyone in the Philly area doing the Philly Tri or just wants some open water swim practice, I will be donning my wetsuit and jumping in the Schuylkill River to do some open water practice in the next week or two (on the weekend). If interested, let me know. And yes the water is safe to swim in.

Are you sure the water is safe and how do you know it is????

May i suggest an open water swim in the marlton NJ area, they have a few different lakes you can swim in.

Philadelphia Police marine unit tested the water. And I will do some swims in the marlton area but do to time constrictions right now, the Schuylkill is my best bet.

I wonder if anyone in the Philadelphia Canoe Club would be interested in spotting you or a group.

I'm not doing the Philly Tri this year, else I'd be interested.

If you don't mind the drive (about 60 minutes) Blue Marsh recreation area has a great spot for open water practice. Show up before the boats to practice in calm conditions or after 10:00 to get some practice in the choppy stuff.

Keep us informed when you're doing this and any updates of if the Philly Canoe Club can be on hand. I'm sure there's plenty of us who would join in. The Schuykill kinda skives me though. I'm considering taking antibiotics before the race.....

yo,
NICE!!!! I just saw this talk buts its too late for me to get there in time. I swam in the Shcukill about ten times in the past two months. The first time I tries wit no suit. Damn! that water was ice cold. Three weeks ago my boy down in Chinatown hooked up a QR suit for me and it is still pretty iced out there. I got arrested 2 times for swimming in the river, the first time it was cause I'm black and the second time was cause I went in two weeks ago during what they called flood stage. I started up near falls bridge and before I knew it I was passing boat house row! I got tangled in a net that someone strung out across the river and a police boat had to be lacnhed to get me out. They charged me with reckless endangerment? The river is fairly clean but watch out when you touch the bottom - gross. Respect to all the philly triers. Peace.

That swim went great. JMC1888 was there too. Water was very cold. Full wet suit was definately needed. Not to bad with the full suit though. Had a spotter in a kayak who said he is willing to spot whenever. Current was stronger than I thought going upstream. The current plus that COLD water, wore me out and maybe the fact that I am coming down with a cold too. Should have wore my HRM.

Great job. I only have a shorty wetsuit so I'll be out there with you closer to race day. Keep in touch.
