This event seems like it could be alot of fun and maybe something I would be interested in come the end of the year.  My only question is, what do you do with your running shoes while swimming?  I can't imagine trying to swim with my shoes on or with my shoes tucked in a waist band.  Any thoughts?

I went to an EST tri clinic in April where a lot  of folks were asking the same question.  The people from EST suggested getting used to running in wet shoes!  One gal just tucks them into her swim suit and takes off.  She also brought a dry bag (for white water rafting, kayaking) to show us that she had attached to a belt that could be clipped around your waist.  She hadn't actually tried to swim with it on though.

The other big suggestion that was made was to practice lots of run to swim to run bricks, since this isn't really one you'd practice for a tri!

Good luck if you tackle this one!

using the kayak bag maybe the best idea just practice your swim pulling a bouy. of course if it sinks it causes a bit more of an issue.

This event was on my list ever since I heard about it, but I've eliminated it in my cost cutting measures.  It sure does look fun though!  I planned some type of heavy duty ziplock type bag...someone suggested REI.

I am considering two ways.  The first being using two ammo mag pouches that attatch to a belt.  Placing each shoe in a zip-lock baggie and then in the pouch.  The belt would be easy to carry and you coudl place your swim gear in there on the run/ride.

The next is a small camelback, like a kids size one.  Again a zip-lock baggie and stuffed into this.  This might work better for people with smaller feet.  My shoes are a 13 and I am not sure they will fit.  I do have the small Camelback, I bought for my daughter for $9 (http://www.nashbar.com/bikes/Product_10053_10052_215599_-1_21500_10000_21502)off Nashbar.com.  One of the waist mounted bag may work better.

I asked the question and I believe it was Eva that sent me a e-mail suggestioning the pull bag.  She did point out swimming with your shoes on was not the best option.

I think the pull behind bag would pull down to one side if it did not float.  If it does float and you hold it close to your body, would that be considered a "swimming aid"...uhm.

I printed the map of the area and blew it up to "D" size on the plotter at work.  It's a kick route and should be real cool.  Since the maps on the EST site are one leg at a time I laid it on the floor and used color markers for the different legs.  Most of the race is on the eastern part of the course.

Let us know what you try, maybe we can hit Holly or Big Fish and have some practice runs.

I haven't read the rules, but if it was allowable, I'd stuff my shorts with bagged shoes (and subsequent air). The extra flotation would be sweet.

That got me thinking ... how about flip flops, and you can use then as paddle in the water ....

Man! That sounds like a ton of fun! Now THIS event would make me feel like a kid again- especially if they added cliff jumping!

I like the camel back idea, that would be the most practical for the non-swimming legs, to carry your swim gear in, and would probably only be a mild nuiscance while swimming. Heck- you could put it on your chest instead of your back and it might help you float!

I just saw waterproof boxes at walmart starting at 7 bucks for the smallest one. you could use one of these if they come big enough for your shoes. also you could look into a water sock or similar water shoe. not as much support for the run but  better than barefoot.
