Subject: Knee issues fixed by a bike fit?

I have always had problems with my IT bands, they tend to get very tight and can sometimes end a workout when they get really bad. I am finally to the point where I can run 10 miles without any problems. I haven't had issues with my IT bands while biking in the past. I bought a new bike a month ago (Cervelo P2C) and have been having issues with my IT band while biking now. I rode my HIM course on saturday and my right IT band was killing me by mile 40, it is still sore today.

So my question is, is it my weak quads causing the IT band problem, and if so why is it only the right leg? Is it the change from a road bike to a tri bike that is causing the problem and if so can it be remedied by riding more?

I plan to get a professional fit on the new bike at some point, my plan was to get around 500 miles on the bike before getting a real fit, so that I would be in more realistic riding form when I got the fit. Only problem is my HIM is in 5 weeks and if my IT band gets that tight during the race I am going to have a real hard time with the run.

So will a proper fit fix my IT band issue? Should I get the fit now or should I get some more miles on my legs for the year before I pay for a fit?

Thanks in advance for any advice, I really appreciate it as I am starting to get a little nervous about this race.

I don't know enough about bike fit issues to be able to advise you on that, but I would totally suggest finding a chiropractor or PT who does ART (Active Release Technique) to help loosen up your IT band.  I had a a lot of issues with ITBS and anterior knee pain, and a few sessions of ART made all the difference in the world.  Before, I couldn't even run a pain-free mile, and now my running is only limited by my overall level of conditioning, not my stupid left leg.  Good luck with your IT band.

A bike fit might fix your ITB problem.  I was having problems with my left ITB because my seat was too low - it had slipped down a bit and I didn't realize it.  Once that got fixed, the ITB problems from biking were fixed.

I agree, it very well may help the issue.  But it may not.  You might look into a foam roller as well to help work out some of the tightness in it.

Have your cleat positioned checked as well.  You may also want to look into more floating cleats.

The bike was always my catalyst for ITBS... A few adjustments to seat hight/different pedals as mentioned and that was it. ITBS always has a main cause and while there are several ways to remedy, most folks fail to realize the main problem, hence it always comes back. Took me a very long season last year and few missed races to figure it out the hard way. Roller, massage, ice etc will all help. But fix the Bike fit and you will be thankful all season.

2 cents...

Thanks for the tips everyone. Have been using the foam roller everyday, which does help a lot but like I said I can only go 25 miles or so on the bike before it starts to tighten up real bad. Guess its time to schedule the fit. Thanks for the advice!
