Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:00 am to find Jamie in pain and distress from a nasty ear infection. She had been up all night stressing about the race and in pain. When I told what she already knew, that she couldn't race, she had a good cry and got it all out of her system. I sent her back to bed and I headed down solo. Once there, I grabbed her bike and put it in the Grand Cherokee. I hung out with the local crowd and caught up with folks I hadn't seen this year yet. My friend Matt and I stood along the lake looking at the course and knew immediatley it was too long. It was called a non wet suit swim, so I broke out the ZOOT Speedsuit and got ready to go.
Swim
  • 28m 51s
  • 2000 yards
  • 01m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim was good, I felt very comfortable and I think i sighted well. I caught up to both the women waves in front of my wave as well as the way back of the M-35-39 who started 6min before us. Most people were way wide to the left, so I just stuck to the center of the lake to find clear water. There was no one to draft off of, so I was on my own. I hit the starirs in 27:5x, and laughed. I knew it was long but I went around 1:23/100 in the water and was happy with that.
Transition 1
  • 00m 50s
Comments:

There was about a :30 run to the timing mat to stop your swim time and enter T1. My bike was in the third rack at the end, so I had a long run to the exit, but I went fast and got out quick.
Bike
  • 1h 00m 28s
  • 25 miles
  • 24.81 mile/hr
Comments:

I headed out onto the course and tried to settle into a rhythm I would be comfortable with. At first I felt like I was pushing a bit too hard, but I kept at it and was able to keep it going. My HR was right at 163 for most of the ride and I made sure I drank my complete bottle of water + 3 GU Roctane's mixed in. The course wasn't too crowded and I liked my new position on the bike. I had the second fastest split after the guy who won the race, he went 59:15 and finished in 2:01, 6min ahead of Patric Bless! Yikes!
Transition 2
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

I had a brain fart as I ran downthe racks and had to stop ansd stare at the racks for at least 10 seconds to find mine, so that wasn't so hot, I should have been quicker than this.
What would you do differently?:

Remember where I parked.
Run
  • 38m 53s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 06m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

It had to be over 90 degrees when i started the run and I knew I had to be careful. I was running great for the first few miles. When I climbed the stairs for the first time, it really elevated my HR and I had to recover a bit crossing the bridge. I didn't look at my HR monitor once on the run, the news wasn't going to be good so I ingnored it. Once back down on the gravel path on the south side of the lake to start lap 2, I came around and felt good again but when I ran over the Scottsdale Rd. bridge and down to the north side concrete rec path, I really started to suffer. I backed off and just tried to hold it together. It was very tough. Once I hit the stairs again, I really felt awful but only had 3/4 mile to go. I tried my best to pick it up and about 200 meters from the finish, a guy in the 30-34 AG I think caught me. Since I had started at least 6min behind him and had nothing left, I couldn't respond and he finished just in front of me. I felt like I had runa 40+ and was very happy to see my actual split. It was a solid run for me, :30 better than last year with hotter conditions, but there were some fast runners here this day.
Post race
Warm down:

I hung out for an hour or two, getting the results and chatting with everyone, but I wanted to get home to Jamie. At first I was a bit dissapointed in my overall placing, but once I saw the splits, I was much happier. I ran the best race I could, it's jsut some really fast guys showed up.

Great race! I cannot imagine racing in that warm of weather - congratulations on holding the run together in those temps and smoking fast on that bike. Sounds like the new bike is working just fine.

Yawn.  Another AG victory in blazing speed.  Yawn.

j/k.  I know it's just rewards for the steady diet of work you put into your training.  Your path back to Kona is lookin' good.

Why are you so damn slow Bryan?   Well that was a fine race you had studly.  You just keep getting better with age.  Hope Jamie is doing better today.

x2 on the faster racers. I dropped my time by 7 mins from last year in the sprint, and finished 15th AG compared to last years 13th.

Great race!!

Sorry to hear of your bride's painful ear episode, but congrats to you. It's always amazing to see your splits; you're an incredible all around triathlete. Kudos to working all 3 disciplines so well, Bryan. Your results are always well earned.

Wow, tough field at this race!
