Expert 1049 Burnaby, BC | Subject: RE: How often do you wash workout clothes? I wash weekly. My cycling stuff gets run through a rinse cycle daily if I commute by bike. If you need more running shirts, just enter more races! I started with one and now have more than I'll wear in a week. |

I wash my workout clothes when i dont have any other to wear. cycling shorts just stay outside and i'll wear those maybe three times a week then they get washed, swimsuit just rinse and dry, same applies with running shorts, and shirts i have enough so i dont have to wash them all the time. |

Just to let you in on how gross I am. When I am working from home for multiple days, at night I take my clothes off and pile them on the floor next to the bed. In the morning I get up, sniff and put on whatever passes. Usually underwear is one day, but hey, sometimes it passes and who am I to mess with my well established standards as low as they may be. Yup, I know it's nasty, I like to say it has something to do with reducing the amount of detergent that is flushed into the lake I swim in, thus helping to maintain the water quality, but I'm really just lazy. To put everyone at ease, this is all assuming I am not going out in public.Every time I wonder if it is a serious question or a joke, and every time I am astonished to find out it's a serious question. I wash everything every time. With the exception of winter running pants, because I wear undies underneath them. Wearing bike shorts and running shorts multiple times without washing them is disgusting and how is that different than not washing your undies? As for shirts, I guess I just don't see how you can put on a completely filth-ridden, sweat-dried, foul-smelling shirt to work out in! I mean really. If it's because you don't have enough to get you through to laundry day, might I suggest going to Target and purchasing a few $9.99 Champion C9 brand tech shirts? Please??? My husband tries to do this but I scoop up all the clothes that he thinks he can wear again and wash them. He can't smell them but I can. Fwiw, wool is naturally antibacterial so the OP's smartwool stuff probably doesn't smell after 1 wearing. I don't like the chafing from dried sweat tho. And so far I've only invested in their sox. |

Our household is only two people and my husband is frequently out on business trips, so it takes about a week or two to build up enough laundry to make it worthwhile. So I go through my clean workout clothes until I run out, then I start digging through the hamper. I guess I should buy more workout clothes... Yeah, I'm gross But I wear underwear under my bike shorts/running shorts, since I'm not hard core enough to go commando like I'm supposed to. |

Um...ouch! Never wear underwear under cycling shorts! And most "real" running shorts have a liner that's like underwear, so you don't need them. I can't imagine wearing underwear underneath shorts like that - I can't imagine the wedgies... |

And most tights and knickers won't have them either ... I know the local running specialty store carries specific technical fabric undies. My rp swears by them for under her tights. |

None of my tights or capris have them, but they have a little sewn in crotch piece instead. I have some technical undies as well - usually wear those if I go hiking, since they absorb sweat well. Am I the only one who goes commando under running tights? |

Master 1529 Living in the past | Subject: RE: How often do you wash workout clothes? graceful_dave - 2009-05-21 11:59 AM I will concede that worn workout clothes never go back in the drawer or closet. Outer wear gets hung up in the garage (draped over handlebars) under wear and other inner layers get hung on the back of the bathroom door. ...and I live downwind... great Single use wash...sanitary setting... |

Pro 5011 Twin Cities | Subject: RE: How often do you wash workout clothes? Rarely. Jackets, once a season. Tights/pants, once, maybe twice. Long sleeve shirts, only when they get really nasty. Everything else--shorts, sportsbras, socks, tank tops, short sleeves--goes into the shower with me. I seriously wash a load of workout clothes MAYBE every 6-8 weeks, if that. |

Veteran 192 Southern California | Subject: RE: How often do you wash workout clothes? One use only, then in the hamper. I have more than enough clothes to last for a week of workouts. 10+ bike jerseys, Technical shirts, shorts, socks, etc. We always check the clearence racks at the LBS, REI, and Target. The C9 stuff may not be the best, but a shirt or shorts for $2.88 on clearance is hard to beat. Laundry day is Sunday at our house and that thing is running non-stop. My wife and I training for HIM/IM, son doing HS cross-country, daughter swimming 4-5 days a week, and the little one just having fun gererates a ton of dirty clothes. We have our schedules set-up for Sunday being a rest day and that is when laundry, yardwork, or whatever needs to be done gets done. It is easier to just buy more(clearance) clothes than worry about washing more than once a week. |

Pro 6767 the Alabama part of Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: How often do you wash workout clothes? Every single time. Maybe once or twice I might have to cut a workout short to 10-15 minutes, in which case I might save them for the next day. But I figure if I did not sweat, I did not work out. And if I did sweat, I need to wash theclothes. Maybe that's why I do laundry every 2-3 days. |

Extreme Veteran 419 San Jose, CA | Subject: RE: How often do you wash workout clothes? Back in the day when I only had one or two sets of workout clothes, I'd wait for 2 runs or maybe 2 bikes before washing them. Now that I'm overflowing in athletic garments, I toss them in the wash after 1 use. |

Expert 973 Berkeley, Calif. | Subject: RE: How often do you wash workout clothes? I'd be curious to see if there's a difference in laundry habits between those who have washing machines in their home and those who don't. I do not, which means I have to haul my clothes to a laundromat to do the laundry. I do laundry about every two weeks (sometimes three if I get busy -- I have lots of regular clothes, plenty of socks/underwear) and yes, I do wear my workout clothes more than once before washing. I also wear panties under my running shorts -- I'll admit that I'd find it disgusting to reuse shorts that I've worn commando. It's just not practical for me to wash workout clothes after one use. If I had a washing machine in my apartment, yes, I'd wash my workout clothes after every use. (Probably. It's kind of a big waste of water/energy, environmentally-speaking...) |
