Subject: Women: Tri in sports bra?
Is there anything wrong with wearing just a regular sports bra with nothing overtop for a tri race?

I know a lot of people wear those one-piece tri-suits...but that would drive me nuts, as would a bathing suit that I put shorts over for the bike & run.

I've also considered wearing one of my shirt-length running tanks w/ the built in bra, but they are somewhat loose around my stomach...probably not great for swimming.

I've also tried on tri-tops, but the tightness is extremely uncomfortable, and I might be wrong, but the built-in bras on those things (I've tried Zoot & Danskin brands) seem really flimsy.  Not that I need very much in the way of support, but coverage would be nice.  (I mean, the model on the Zoot website has nippage, and I assume the top she is wearing is dry!)

Anyway, the sports bra seems like a good (and no-cost!) way to get around my problem of too loose/too tight top options.  Just wanted to make sure there's no faux-pax I'd be breaking (or unforseen problem I'm not thinking about) by having my stomach exposed for the whole race.

I've seen pictures of women completing the run leg wearing a sports bra or half-shirt and tri shorts, so I don't think it's that big of a problem.  Do whatever makes you the most comfortable, is what I say!

Nope, nothing wrong with that unless for some reason, a race director rules against it. A friend of mine did that for her first tri, since she hadn't gotten a tri top and didn't feel like spending the money. But she's UBER-thin and has the abs for it. If I had the abs for it, I'd do it too. One of these days...

PS - don't worry about nippage. No one will look or care.

I've completed a fair share of tri's in just a sports bra, it just depends on the temps. You can find a tri top that doesn't have a built-in bra, and wear that as your race top, if you want to cover your abs. My favorite tops are from sugoi, and they have no built in bra and are not too tight. My two favorites have zips down the center, so I can get some air flowing if I need to.

I hear ya on the nippage on some of those built-in bras- I DO care about nippage in my race pics, because people will 'point' it out (ha!) and laugh at your pics- in jest, of course, but still...So, I'd rather run in a sports bra, and distract them with my abs

I'm trying out a 1 piece for the first time this season, and I picked one that had sufficient coverage, because of my self-consciousness- we'll see how it goes!

Everybody has nippage.  I think a sports bra would be fine but I wouldn't use cotton, something synthetic would be best.  Make sure you test it out first - in the water and running.

I look.  I care.  I appreciate.

Just saying...

And, that is exactly why the flimsy-bra'd tri tops worry me!

It's all fun and games until someone takes the padding out of your bike/tri shorts, boy!

I wear a sports bra under the built in bras.

I cannot tolerate ANY sort of heat very well. As a result I almost always race in just tri shorts and a sports bra. Did the run portion of Mooseman HIM as a relay on Sunday and there were lots of women dressed as such............

I just started racing in sports bras this season instead of tri tops with built in shelf bras and like just the sports bras much better.  they are great- especially when it's HOT.

I have found though that some sports bra will sag a little while swimming in the water, so make sure to test yours out for swimming before the race.   I did an OW swim in 2 of my sports bras- my Nike one had some drag issues, but my C9 champion sports bra from Target didn't   It worked well in the water.

I did wear a tricks sports bra in my last tri that came up a little higher in the front and fit really tight and didn't create any drag.  It also has a little gel pocket hidden inside that you can carry a gel or key in.  And since those come in a polka dot design, nippage isn't as noticeable   Another tip- I usually use band aids to hide nippage for races and they seem to do the trick

That's what I do. Sport bra and shorts or bikini briefs.

1. For the drag issue...in non-wetsuit swims, I wear a swimsuit over mine, and yank off. Takes may 5 seconds.

2. For the nippage...I just don't care, I guess. :D

Oh don't worry about him. Guys will stare at you no matter what you're wearing. And they'll be wearing spandex too, so you can always point and laugh and that'll shut them up

Not all bra tops are flimsy - I have a Nike one that could definitely be worn on its own. As long as it's lined somehow, it'll be fine. But I echo what KeriKadi said - synthetic, not cotton.

I wore a tri top and sports bra underneath for my first one.  The shelf bra wasn't that supportive and not sure if you can see in my avatar pic, but I've got some to support.  As thin as I get those damn things just stay there.  Even with all that on, I have one finishing shot showing nippage...must have been excited when I saw the finish line....OH WELL!!

A sports bra it is, then.  And as a bonus, I'll have more motivation to work on my "core strength" exercises between now and race day!

Thanks, girls!

This thread made me smile..
I think you're looking at it from the wrong perspective.. my question.. would you rather have nippage or shrinkage?

I've done any races in just sport bras and a few tris. I overheat SO easily, I could care less how it looks.

Just make sure it's a dark color so it doesn't turn see thru when wet. I thought I was safe w/ a lined hot pink bra.  Talk about nippage....

^^^Bah, I dislike you and your perfect abs... :-P See, if I looked like that, I'd wear nothing but a sports bra too. It's probably cooler anyway (as in cold, cool).

And there's my secondary motivation for doing this -- aside from having fun, I wanna be able to run around in a sports bra without scarring the eyes of those around me!  lol...
