this sounds crazy, i know, but a coworker jokes around with me and says i should put weight on my bike. the other day i considered it...going to play it again sports and buying some weights with material that wont affect the bike's appearance and tying it on and training with that. has anyone done this before?

Why?  Just pedal harder.

To what end?

If it is so that you have to work harder on the bike, then you would benefit just as much from working harder while you are on the bike.

If you want to run some numbers with changing the weight of your bike, check out analyticcycling.com.

you need weights to slow you down and force you to work harder?

X2... ride in a harder gear, increase cadence, whatever, but no point in adding weight to the bike.  Unless you are spinning up hills in your 50/12 gear.
