This was my first Olympic distance last year....and so far my favorite of all triathlons I have done!  Have you been riding up Lee Hill/Olde Stage?

LOL, no but I have heard all about it -  have not been able to get up there...and I'm in CA on vacation until Sunday!

Closest to that incline I've been able to train is Deer Creek Canyon, but I do ride a triple and am mentally preparing to use the granny gear

The hill seemed a lot steeper than Deer Creek to me.  More along the lines of Floyd Hill.  Not to worry you

I'll be there. I haven't done this race for several years and not since 5430 Sports took it over. The hill is a challenge, but it comes early enough in the race so the legs are still relatively fresh. Plus there is good downhill after to recover. The run can be tough if it's hot as there is no shade.

well, as the course site declares, "...about 6 miles into the clockwise loop will ascend 15% Old Stage Hill (600' vertical climb in 2/3 of a mile)..."  so, that'll be fun Yell

I heard that other than that section on old stage road, the course is pretty flat and downhill. (though I did go up that hill, and it should be pretty slow going.)

Congrats on both counts!

Yes, the rest of the route is easy peasy and fast.  Just Lee Rd and Old Stage to get past, then enjoy!  Have a great race!!

My second Oly, training race for HIM...I haven't decided if I'll try to locate Old Stage tomorrow on my ride, I guess I should...sheesh. though, gauging by what Maas posted (15%???)

I'm worried about cut-off times.

You don't need to worry about cut-off times, Ada!!  The hill is steep but short.  My plan, which may or may not work, is to take it pretty easy til I get past that hill, then hammer home.

Sorry you're hurt.  I'm sure you've tried all the usual suspects that can't say no to a race, like DD.

No way you need to worry about cut off times!  You will be fine.

A lot of people walk their bikes up the hill...seriously.

For most people, walking the bike is faster than biking it

In all seriousness, that hill, although steep, is relatively short. The key is to maintain your pacing going up Lee Hill so you have some reserves when rounding that corner and staring up Old Stage. Also, note that once you crest the initial steep Old Stage climb, you still have a couple other minor climbs. I remember the first time I crested that steep section and started a descent thinking "that wasn't so bad." That feeling lasted for about 30 seconds, as I was greeted w/ yet another climb. But after a session of 15-20%, anything less than 10% is a speed bump!

Good luck. It's a fun race w/ great support. You should have a great time. And if it makes you feel any better about your date w/ Old Stage, a few of us opted to do the Triple Bypass, which is the day before the Peak. I figure by the time Loveland Pass rolls around, I'll be wishing I was doing intervals up Old Stage in a fixie

My brother walked the hill last year.  WHile his bike split was still slower than mine, he beat me overall with a faster run.  Maybe I should have walked too.  The hill is steep but not that bad.  Remember spin up it if you can.  A triple or compact crank would be nice.

I'm not racing this year so I'll try to get out and cheer everyone on!  There is an old hand painted sign at the top of Old Stage marking the end of the climb.  As cooutdoors pointed out, you think you are done when you get through the steep section but trust me you aren't done until you see the sign.

I am in.  RIde the hill but it is not that bad just spin up it and save your energy for the rollers on the back side.  THat is where alot of people lose time.  Best of luck all.

This will be my 2nd Boulder Peak...maybe I already said that above...anyway, last year a lady in front of me got so slow going up Olde Stage that she came to a dead stop and just tipped over on her bike.  The funny thing is that she never got out of the saddle to try to give herself a little extra speed.  Tough spot to get going again, but yeah, I think most people could walk it faster than ride it

I need to meet a 1:20pm flight at DIA, so I'll be at packet pick-up early and going to the 11a.m. pre-race meeting.  Anyone else planning to be there on the earlier side of Saturday?  Looking forward to meeting some more BTers!

It makes me feel better that other people have walked the hill. I'm pretty sure I can clear it, but you never know until you try, right?

Has anyone got a "Final race" instructions email yet?? I looked on the website, and nothing has changed. I guess I'm just wondering about start times...what wave I'll be in and all that good stuff.

StMass or anyone else for that matter... ...are you by chance coming back to Denver Sat. after you attend the meeting? My husband is doing the Triple Bypass and I'm going up to Avon to pick him up when he finishes and unfortunately won't be able to attend the meeting. So....I was wondering if you could email me any important information about the race? If not, no biggy...I'm sure I'll be o-kay.

Good luck everyone! See you on the other side of "the hill"..ha ha
