Total Time = 1h 10m 59s
Overall Rank = 19/302
Age Group = M25-29
Age Group Rank = 4/18
Pre-race routine:

1 packet oatmeal for breakfast, along with some water and a few sips of coke for some caffeine.
Event warmup:

3 mile quick spin bike ride, 1/2 mile run, few hundred in the res.
Swim
  • 13m 41s
  • 875 yards
  • 01m 34s / 100 yards
Comments:

I felt like a pushed the swim harder that I have in my first two tris, it felt good though and I was leading my wave throughout the first 3/4 of the swim, two others from my wave joined me at the end. Lot of jockeying for position as our wave left last so by the time I finished I had gone through 3 or so groups of different color caps.
What would you do differently?:

Navigate better through the other swimmers
Transition 1
  • 01m 27s
Comments:

Wow, I was very dizzy when I got out of the water, I thought I was running striaght but kept going to the left! One of the wetsuit strippers tried to help me but I think she slowed me down more than anything else.
What would you do differently?:

Still need to learn how to do the ride barefoot deal, just haven't practiced it.
Bike
  • 34m 40s
  • 13 miles
  • 22.50 mile/hr
Comments:

Pushed the bike pretty hard - perhaps I need to try a slightly lower cadence and hammer a little more to go faster. The course has a couple hills which I have climbed faster during training sessions so I was a little dissappointed at that but finished the bike pretty strong.
What would you do differently?:

perhaps a lower cadence to bring my hr down.
Transition 2
  • 00m 47s
Comments:

I think the transisitons are what are leading to my side stitches during the run...I need to take my time a little bit more and relax so I can get a good rhythm on the run. It was a pretty fast transition for me.
Run
  • 20m 22s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 33s  min/mile
Comments:

Run was rough..again. Side stiches pretty much from the very start all the way through the run and progressively got worse. At the end I felt like I was getting a quarter of a breath in, tops. I could have gone so much faster, very frustrating. The course was short, the results have me at a 6:40 pace which is very optimistic. I'd been trying to work on my running so I was dissappointed this didn't come around.
What would you do differently?:

slower coming out of transition, really focus on breathing to get some deep breaths in and eliminate the side stiches.
Post race
Warm down:

quick spin on the bike, hung around and watched the awards.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Side stiches on the run.

Event comments:

Overall a fun race. I had a really good swim and a strong bike, my transitions could have been better and my run was bad again. Cherry creek is a pretty cool venue and the water was great, actually quite warm and although sometimes frustrating to get through the other people in the water, kind of fun at the same time. Bike was pretty good overall, could have taken the corners a bit faster to keep my speed up. Looking forward to figuring out my run. If I can get rid of these side stiches I know I can average a much faster run split.

Nice race! 19th OA is something to be very proud of. I've struggled with extreme dizziness coming out of the swim and in T1. On my last race, I used earplugs and wasn't dizzy at all. These are what I used: http://www.proplugs.com/swimming.shtml

Great race!  Still a pretty fast transition for you in T1 with dealing with the dizziness and all.  I usually feel dizzy after the swim as well and my transition from the swim really pays for it!

Thanks guys!  it overall was a good race and I did feel like I am getting faster, just wish I could have kept it together better on the run and been able to really go for it instead of trying to quell those side stitches.   Thanks for the reference on the earplugs Breckview..I take it you got the vented ones?

I take it you got the vented ones?

Yes. I bought some introductory kit which includes like four sizes. One size fit me perfectly and since I only use them in racing I think they'll last forever.
