Subject: Keeping yourself out of the gym
Hey all,

Newb here.  I just started the couch to sprint in 22wks program.  I'm 30yrs old and haven't been "active" in about four years.  Never was a gym person.  Got my exercise other places.

Well now due to being a "grown-up" I have to go to the gym to get my exercise.

My question is: How do you stay OUT of the gym in the evenings?  I go at 5am and feel so good after my work outs I want to go back in the evening after my body has recovered during the day.  I know I should give it some more time to heal but DANG I like the feeling of a good workout!

Maybe you CAN go back to the gym in the evening and do some strength training or something or maybe go for a swim. Obviously you don't want to hurt yourself or ramp up your mileage or training time too fast

BUT, the real question is...why the gym? Get out there and swim/ride/run outdoors, it's even more fun!

Good luck!

How do I keep myself out?  Kids and all their activiites, work, new big house and chores, extended family needs, church, the list seems to go on and on.  I have to squeeze in workouts when I can, and I only go to the gym in the summer to swim.

Good luck on your road to "in shape" and your first Tri!

Nothing wrong with two-a-days.

Edit: Just be sure not to overdo it. Do some cardio in the morning and light lifting in the evening. Better yet, get a trainer and have him/her write up a plan for you that incorporates tri training. I know our gym has tri coaches on staff who do coaching and weight training programs.

The reason for the gym is that I don't have a road worthy bike or a place to swim.  As soon as I have the $ saved up for a bike, that part will be moved outside.

I don't have kids yet so that cuts down on the other time takers.

Good to know I don't have to avoid the gym in the evenings if I'm really wanting another workout.

Thanks for the support folks!

Yeah, definitely don't avoid it if you feel good.  When I was swimming in college, it was 2-a-days, plus weights.  Just be careful not to do too much, or you'll get hurt, and won't be able to do much of anything.

Hey Roach,

I feel your pain. I'm 33yrs old & in the same boat as you. The difference for me is that my schedule is pretty flexible ( I'm a firefighter, so I work about 10 days a month) & my gym has daycare. So I have the kids covered.  I have been into the natural bodybuilding aspect of lifting weights for about 10 years now.

I see no problem in hitting the gym twice a day. I'm easing my way into the distance running aspect of triathlons. It's going to be very hard for me to sacrifice my lifting for sprint triathlon training, because it's now a part of my daily routine. But I plan on hitting the weights in the a.m. & then getting my bike, or swim, or run workout in the p.m.  I'll probably start doing more circuit training, for my lifting sessions, after the first of the year. That's when I plan on really dialing myself in for my first sprint tri.

I figure if an 80 year old nun can complete a full Ironman........FIVE + TIMES, then I sure as crap can build this 33yr old body up to doing a 1/2 ironman...at the very least

Easy for me...I despise working out in a gym.  (Goes for biking on the trainer at home, for that matter.)  Road, trail, pool, ocean...all good.

But you're really asking how to not work out twice a day.

Sometimes I do.  If you have the time and the inclination and a good reason to do it, it's not a crime.  Have fun.
