Hello all!

My name is Eric and I am a married father of three living in North Carolina. I am also extremely obsese (if you go by that blasted BMI index) and looking to make a change. While sitting in the hotel room while on business in Texas (eating a Papa Johns pizza and swilling beer) I happened upon a program about the Ironman triathlon. They focused on some amazing competitors... not winners or record breakers but real people who were putting themselves through torture for their own personal reasons. I actually started to cry watching this program because I saw all of these people old enough to be my grandparents who were living life and participating in such an extreme endurance challenge... and here I am barely able to pull myself off the couch to change the channel if the remote control breaks. Needless to say this was a life changing moment for me.

I am 5'7 and weigh about 265 pounds. Like most overweight people here I used to be in fantastic shape... before I got married and started having kids. I want my life back! I want to be able to out-play my kids... I want to play rugby again.... I want to love life and push it to the limit. I want to compete in triathlons!!!

Well, just wanted to introduce myself. My goal, if it is attainable, would be to participate in a half triathlon next year around my birthday (September.) Is this an reasonably attainable goal? I have the heart, I know that, but I don't want to be stupid at the same time.

Thanks in advance for all of the advice,

Eric

If you set your mind to it, you CAN and WILL achieve your goals!

Good luck and welcome to BT. It`s a great resource, and a great place to look for motivation when the going gets tough.

Eric,
I think that goal is definitely attainable. Just start slow and make sure you try some shorter races before the "half triathlon". Am I correct in assuming you meant half Ironman? Make sure you do some sprints and Olympics along this long road. It will keep your half IM goal fresh and exciting. Make sure you keep track of your workouts also so you can track your progress. This site has some great resources; great place to start!

Good luck!!

Thank you Victoria! I did mean half Ironman but maybe my goal should be to run an olympic length first? I looked here and I cannot find a couch to half-ironman...

There are 1/2 Ironman plans, but they asume that you can already complete certain times in each of the three disciplines. You might want to start on a couch-to-Olympic, and then when your times start to match those in the 1/2 Ironman plan, you could switch over. Just a thought, but I`M no expert. The tri forum would also be a good place to post a question like this.

1/2 Ironman by Sept. 2006? You can totally do that. There are no couch to 1/2 IM plans, but there are also no 16 month plans. If I were you, I'd do a couch to sprint program, and try a sprint near your birthday this year. Then keep a good base over the winter and aim for an Oly early 2006, and build thru the season to your 1/2 IM in Sept. 06. Totally doable. Congrats on taking the plunge, and good luck and above all else have fun.

Yes!!!! Another North Carolinian!!! Welcome to a great site and the start of a new chapter in your life... You will love both.

I have to agree that your goal is achievable. I hope to do the same, but my starting blocks are way in front of yours. Like the other people on this site have said... Start with the sprints or Olympic length and move on up to the half..

Can't wait to see you at the Duke Liver Half next year. Awesome goal.... Not just for you but for your kids and wife...

Welcome Eric!!

I was in quite a similar situation as you last november..(except withouth the kids )

I decided that i had been inactive for too long and needed to get back in shape. I'm 6'0" and started off at 260lbs. yesterday my scale said that I was down to a slim 240 I'm feeling better and I LOVE the challenges that training for a Tri is giving me. Not to mention the super community and people that this sport carries! Both here at BT.com and locally. I have yet to "compete" in a tri but my first one is two weeks from today.

Good luck with your new goal.. You can certianly achieve it!!

Will

What part of NC are you in? There are quite a few around Raleigh. I seem to be the only active blogger in the Wilmington area.

I'd suggest you go for the couch to sprint program. There's a great fall sprint here in Wilmington in late September. There's also an Oly distance at Pine Hurst in early October.

Hey Eric!

My husband is 270 pounds, and recently decided that he was going to train for his first sprint triathlon this summer! He was inspired by tmwelshy's article here on BT. I'm stoked, and couldn't be more proud of him! He's also setting a great example for our 3 kids.

Honestly, I totally think it's doable, and it's awesome that you want to do it!!
