Tinman Hawaii
80F / 27C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 32m 5s
Overall Rank = 121/542
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 18/46
Pre-race routine:

work up at the ungodly hour of 2:30am, downed a OJ/Green Envy, took a Redbull, Cliff Bar, Oatbar, GU, Banana, and Accelerade in the car.
Drove from kailua. Found parking wasn't too bad, which I feared.
Event warmup:

self body marked, got the bike ready, rode around in the parking lot a bit. checked in, racked the bike, laid out my stuff, and stretched. Had time to kill.
Swim
  • 14h 40m 8s
  • 820 yards
  • 1h 47m 17s / 100 yards
Comments:

fairly mild conditions, because we swam side shore to the waves. outside surf was 3-5 feet, but inside swim course was pretty mellow. some coral initially, but wasn't too much of a problem. good guides, although hated the exhaust smell from the jetski's. almost made me ralph. glad I bought goggles with clear lenses, water was dark. way easier swim than the last 2 tri's. was a bit hard to spot the buoy due to the weave in the outbound leg.
What would you do differently?:

swim faster !
Transition 1
  • 02m 47s
Comments:

Long run from the swim finish.

I wore gloves, and tried to put them on after getting on the road, was hard to do.
What would you do differently?:

probably next time either no gloves or just put them on in the transition area.
Bike
  • 1h 20m 29s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.53 mile/hr
Comments:

Good course, quite a few moderate hills. 1 difficult hill "heartbreak" in Hawaii Kai. Otherwise good course. Felt decent, although some gusty headwinds on the way out. Getting more used to aero position, helped my time. sore butt !
What would you do differently?:

get some body lube. train harder. bike is my slowest segment.
Transition 2
  • 01m 37s
Comments:

ok T2. ran off with my gloves on.
What would you do differently?:

practice !
Run
  • 52m 30s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 27s  min/mile
Comments:

legs felt ok after about the 2 mile mark. stomach ok, not too sloshy.
full running strength about 1/2 way through. overall happy with the run.
What would you do differently?:

train more !
Post race
Warm down:

walked, drank the rest of my accelerade, got gatorade and water. ate a banana.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

need to train more specifically for triathlons. training was adequate, but to get a better time, more effective training is needed. practice transitions of course !!

Event comments:

This was my first Tinman. I just started doing tri's this year, and so it was also my first Olympic class tri. I really liked it overall and looking forward to next year. excellent organization.

Great race. This was my first Oly distance too. Can't wait for next season.
I had dark lenses on my goggles. It was like evening out.  Something I'll consider next time for sure.
